Let’s enable girls to lead and break boundaries.
By ensuring they can
👧🏿 stay in school
👧🏽 make their own decisions about their health and bodies
👧🏾 prevent pregnancies
👧🏻 access health services without stigma
👧🏼 stay safe
they can build a brighter future for everyone! https://t.co/ZrJw4OSTdr

On International #DayOfTheGirl, we celebrate the power of girls in advocating for justice and equality. This year’s theme, "Girls’ vision for the future," emphasizes the need to empower young women, as many still face discrimination and violence.

It's #DayOfTheGirl and here are some FACTS:
😔119.3 million girls are out of school
😔9 million girls will be married as child brides by 2030
Despite these challenges, girls continue to challenge the status quo.

As a proud father of a teenage daughter, Blen, I’m deeply grateful for the strides science has made to protect her and millions of other girls from a really deadly disease — #CervicalCancer. Thanks to safe and effective #HPV vaccines, this is a worry that can be eliminated from parents' minds.
However, not every girl is as fortunate. Despite the various safe vaccine options, many still don’t have access due to affordability and availability issues.
HPV vaccine rollouts have faced setbacks, from global supply shortages since 2018 to production challenges earlier this year, leaving millions of girls — especially in Africa and Asia — without this critical protection.
At WHO, we are working day and night with partners to change this. Recently, WHO approved the use of a fourth HPV vaccine for use with a single dose, bringing us one step closer to eliminating cervical cancer and bridging the gap in vaccine access.
On this #DayOfTheGirl, I urge all governments to invest in making HPV vaccines accessible and affordable. Vaccinating at least 90% of girls in your country can eliminate cervical cancer from our children’s futures.
To vaccine manufacturers, I call on you to prioritise people over profits. Let’s ensure every girl, everywhere, has the chance to receive this vital protection.
And to fellow parents — HPV vaccines are safe. They are a gift of protection, allowing our daughters to live healthy lives, chase their dreams, and be truly free.
Today, on #DayOfTheGirl, I reflect on the untapped potential of Africa’s girls.
With proper support, they can lead the future.
Let’s fight to give them access to education, healthcare, and a life free from poverty.
Together, we must break the cycle.

#InternationalDayOfTheGirl is a thoughtful reminder of our shared responsibility to invest in the health of the next generation, especially girls. Providing every child with a bed net and ensuring every pregnant mother receives IPT isn’t just about preventing malaria – it’s about nurturing the future of girls. Healthy girls grow into empowered women who shape stronger communities and brighter nations.
Cooperation among countries on public health matters is mutually beneficial. They share experiences, learn from one another and advance the global health agenda. As part of the upcoming European Public Health Conference, I will be joining the discussion on how countries from diverse geographic contexts but which share a common language - Portuguese- are working together to boost their health systems and achieve their health goals. #SDGs #UHC #CPLP
#Mpox is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Africa needs support in testing, diagnosing, and controlling its spread. We must share data, ensure equitable access to vaccines, and stick to the science. Watch my interview on common concerns and travel! @AJEnglish

Stagnant immunization rates in 2023 are a stark reminder of the gaps in our global health systems. Latest data from @WHO and @UNICEF shows global childhood immunization stalled in 2023, leaving 2.7 million more children unvaccinated compared to 2019. https://t.co/pDPWEHVywC
In the past 25 years @gavi has helped immunize more than 1 billion children. Continuous investment and innovation can help ensure that families don't lose children to preventable disease, and communities and economies blossom. #Vaccines save lives.

Nourishing roots: Why women’s health matters for all.
Preventable maternal deaths remains a grave issue in Sub-Saharan Africa. Stronger healthcare systems can save the lives of mothers to nurture their offsprings. Now is the time to invest in reproductive and maternal services through quality health systems. In addition to addressing broader determinants such as education and empowerment of girls and women, good nutrition for adolescents, children, pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as improving awareness of preventable causes of maternal deaths.

This #AfricaVaccinationWeek is an opportunity to highlight the life-saving power of #vaccines. Let us work together to ensure progress in reaching every child and seeing that they are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.
