Africa doesn’t have a deal flow problem. The bigger question is what we choose to fund and what those investments ultimately produce.

Two weeks ago, I joined the Ajim Summit during the 81st @UN General Assembly (UNGA) for a conversation on deal flow and where capital is moving across Africa’s technology ecosystem.

@Velocityhq_, we think about that through the lens of impact. Not simply how much capital is deployed or how quickly a company scales, but what that growth unlocks: jobs, greater access, stronger businesses and more productive economies.

The best technology investments should solve real problems and contribute to the priorities of the markets they serve. That connection between capital, innovation and economic outcomes is where I believe the opportunity gets especially interesting.

🌍 Applications are open for the 2027 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders (@YaliWashington).

Approximately 550 young leaders from across Africa will travel to the United States in June 2027 for a six-week executive-style programme combining leadership development, professional exchange and networking.

The Fellowship is the flagship programme of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) and is administered by IREX.

Fellows will:
🎓 Participate in a six-week Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university
💡 Engage with experts in business and trade, emerging technologies, and governance and security
🤝 Build connections with U.S. public- and private-sector leaders
🌐 Join a network of nearly 7,800 Fellowship alumni

Programme costs are covered by the U.S. Government, including J-1 visa support, round-trip travel, required U.S. travel, housing and meals.

Applicants should generally be 25–35 years old, although exceptional applicants aged 21–24 may be considered.
