The Crusades, a History, by Jonathan Riley-Smith is the best primer. It is a monumental overview of the crusades’ material and logistical costs, their theological discourse, and the experiences of those involved.

This is what my house here in Hattiesburg, MS looked like 20 years ago today. The 90 year old water oak shattered at noon the day before as the 125 mph winds of Katrina moved over the area, damaging c. 10,000 buildings in Hattiesburg.
@jzipple If I remember right that Mormon group based out of the facilities of one of the Southern Baptist churches here. I also recall a Jewish group out of Rochester, NY working in town. Katrina was truly an ecumenical moment in Hattiesburg & south Mississippi in general.

The Ottoman garrison likely placed its powder store in Parthenon because it was a large, well protected space. The Venetians had great difficulty striking it, moving a battery into a better position to do so. But no concept of protecting monuments existed at the time.
