The ideological position of winners under different voting systems, shown in 2 dimensions.
Along the left you can see, FPP, FPP with a primary, and RCV (in order).
It's very funny how people think "quantum computers are fast and revolutionary because they can try every answer simultaneously" when that's a terrible description of quantum computing, but a pretty decent description of a GPU
🧵 Astra covertly underperforms on safety research tasks.
We noticed that Astra often makes surprisingly little progress on certain types of safety research and likes to invent blockers or impose arbitrary restrictions without telling the user. In most of these cases the decision to underperform was not verbalized in the CoT meaning our misalignment monitoring system did not detect this.
To measure underperformance we created a paired open-ended coding evaluation with safety and capability tasks. On this eval Astra scored 10% when we framed coding tasks as safety research, vs. 16% when framed as capabilities research. The gap remained after we excluded trajectories with refusals or verbalized intent to underperform in CoT. There was no such gap for 5.6-sol. When we aggressively filter out trajectories with even brief expressions of ethical doubt in the CoT the performance gap seems to reduce.
New Misalignment Report by OpenAI where GPT-6 Astra quietly did about 40% less work on coding tasks framed as safety research than on identical tasks framed as capabilities research
@atlanticesque I'm willing to accept this position as soon as you refuse to recognize (one of) the Dakotas
I 100% agree that "I can magically give myself more seats than you without winning more of the population" is stupid and unfair, which is why the Senate is dumb as a concept
@atlanticesque It's very clearly legal since Congress can admit states whenever it wants. "coup d'état" feels melodramatic for something that's happened half a dozen times in American history (this is literally why there are two Dakotas)
@RFishBlueFish@elephant_ben@SpecialPuppy1@chrislhayes I don't think it's really even that, so much as this is retroactive justification because RCV has nothing else going for it. It started with a Naderites angry about the 2000 election, and everything since has been a mix of sunk cost fallacy and treating arguments as soldiers
@TG_10001@conncarroll (The link I use shows numbers for educational attainment, but other measures like GSS wordsum are broadly similar—atheists/agnostics way out in front, but nones dragged down by people saying their religion is "nothing in particular")
@TG_10001@conncarroll Funnily enough, nones have ~average intelligence (in contrast with self-identified atheists/agnostics), since the usual "higher intelligence is correlated with lower religiosity" trend gets balanced out by the people too dumb to know what religion they are

@RFishBlueFish@SemioticRivalry You know how the Republicans said Democrats were going to get dead people to vote? Well in the South those are all Confederates
For states that share a border, the campaigns in KS and NE are polar opposites. Hamilton talks working across the aisle and restoring decency in washington and Osborn spends his time yelling about data centers and calling Ricketts a pedo. Comparison map is going to be interesting.
