@OluwatobiXR@UgochukwuCFR You are very fallacious Tobi. He was addressing Nigeria, and Nigeria speaks English, if he wrote it in Igbo, you might not get the point, and millions of other Nigerians. You guys should use your brains more often
Having seen how some Nigerians have approached this native language preservation conversation, all I can say is that we have low self-esteem, a poor self-image, and an identity crisis as a people.
Many Nigerians in Nigeria want to be White so badly that they bleach their beautiful Black skin and laugh at you when you make minor grammatical errors - equating Whiteness with superiority and eloquence with intelligence. Meanwhile, many Nigerians abroad would empty their savings just to ensure their children can speak their native language.
That’s why a boy born and raised in the UK is named Bukayo Saka, while a girl born and raised in Nigeria is named Mercy Johnson.
There’s a difference between these two kinds of Nigerians. One mistakes glitter for gold; the other has been close enough to the glitter to know it isn’t gold.
One of the most misguided questions these folks ask is, “Who has speaking Igbo, Hausa, or Yoruba helped?” They go on to argue that “speaking English, French, German, Chinese, etc., opens more doors than speaking your native language.”
But they miss the point: you can speak your native language and still speak 10 other foreign languages if that’s your definition of “access to opportunities.” Your child can be bilingual, trilingual, quadrilingual, multilingual, polyglot, or even hyperpolyglot.
If you like, refuse to speak your native language. Refuse to teach it to your children. Refuse to give them native names. Deny your identity and embrace another man’s language and identity.
But know this: you’ll never be more French than the French, or more English than the English. The texture of your hair, the color of your eyes, your accent, the color of your skin, and your ancestry will always reveal your true identity.
