The civil service reform agenda can't be just an exercise in saving money.

“If we’re looking at a different sized civil service, it’s going to need to be a better paid one” 🗣️
Our General Secretary @mikeclancy1 spoke to @LBC ahead of today’s Spring Statement.
Prospect general secretary Mike Clancy says officials should not be characterised as “blockers” and pay frameworks must be reviewed

“These are places which don’t always arrive on the public’s radar until they realise how important they are and that the people in them are experts.”
@mikeclancy1 speaking up for our public sector members who work at regulators on @TimesRadio 📻
Civil servants have been integral to helping the UK navigate the challenges we have faced in recent times. This government must end the tradition of treating the civil service as a political punchbag.

@ProspectUnion@mikeclancy1 2/2 "A serious reform agenda must start not from blunt headcount targets, but from an appraisal of the specialist skills needed in areas like and data, and a realisation that the current pay system does not compete with the private sector for these skills"
Our @ProspectUnion take from @mikeclancy1
1/2 "Nobody would say the civil service is perfect, and our members are willing partners in reform, but this government must end the tradition of treating the civil service as a political punchbag.

UK politicians have been watching DOGE in the US with interest- but we should all be wary of importing this model to our shores. Indiscriminate attacks on public services and regulations aren't going to end well for America.

Important report from @IPPR that highlights that a lack of resourcing for specialists and regulators in government will hinder the government’s growth mission if not addressed.
For the President of the United States to be making baseless, prejudiced, comments about dedicated air traffic professionals at this time is utterly deplorable.
We at @ProspectUnion send our solidarity to ATC colleagues in the USA and everyone affected by this tragedy.
Investing in digital technology including AI is essential to modernise government, and this review recognises that there should not be a trade-off between people and technology: we need both.
We look forward to engaging with government on how to implement this plan.
"The review is clear that for years specialist skills have been undervalued in government, leading to a hollowing out of crucial know-how and over reliance on expensive private contractors" https://t.co/oIlJ8Q5XrU
The civil service has had a decade of systematic and ideological pay cuts, especially in comparison with private sector and lacks a strategy for pay progression and specialist pay.

“It’s a great place for a day out, but it’s much more than that”
A really interesting piece on #r4today about @kewgardens and a reminder of the varied and important work that @ProspectUnion members in public services do! 🌱 🪴
Prospect will be working to support any members affected by these job losses including those whose workloads may increase as a result.
We welcome confirmation from the Cabinet Office that it is looking solely at voluntary redundancies

Absolutely - the government has the right to set the size of the civil service but they need to develop a proper workforce plan in consultation with unions instead of relying on blunt targets.
Mike Clancy, general secretary of @ProspectUnion said: "We need a clear plan for the future of the civil service that goes beyond the blunt headcount targets that have failed in the past.
