India, despite operating in a relatively stable international environment interrupted mainly by the 2008 financial crisis, failed to translate its demographic and economic potential into economic leadership.

From 2014–2026, India emerged as the G20's fastest-growing major economy while navigating a far more turbulent world shaped by the pandemic, inflation, fractured supply chains and geopolitical conflicts.

The "lost decade" was not defined by difficult global conditions.

It was defined by India's inability to convert a favourable global environment into sustained economic leadership.

The following decade demonstrated that stronger leadership can deliver high growth even in an era of persistent global disruption.

Over the past year, many people have argued that Mohan Charan Majhi is not good enough to lead Odisha. In hindsight, that criticism now seems premature. I was somewhat skeptical myself in last 1 year, but considering his lack of administrative experience, it was only fair to give him 2–3 years before passing judgment. He has begun delivering, particularly on the investment front, and that deserves recognition.

A Chief Minister does not personally make every policy decision or execute every initiative. The real responsibility of a CM is to identify capable people, place them in the right positions, empower them, listen to their professional advice, and ensure the government functions effectively.

At the same time, as a politician he has the added challenge of managing the complexities of politics while maintaining good governance and creating an environment conducive to economic growth and investment.

As things stand today, there is little reason to dismiss him as an ineffective Chief Minister. He still has to prove that he can become a truly outstanding CM, but based on the work so far, it would be unfair to label him a bad one.

The approval for the construction of a new coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradeep in Odisha will improve connectivity across Khordha, Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts while significantly reducing travel time. This modern project will strengthen logistics, support tourism and economic activity and provide safer and seamless connectivity for passengers as well as freight traffic. At the same time, coastal development will be enhanced.

Odisha regime really needs to up its PR game consider its impressive accomplishments in rebooting
stalled industrialisation efforts.

For two decades (Patnaik rule), the state was a graveyard of mega-project announcements.

POSCO's ₹51,000 crore steel plant was shelved after land disputes, ArcelorMittal exiting in 2013, Vedanta's university never materialised. Bold MoUs, zero execution.

But in just 2 years,Majhi government has flipped the script entirely with 433 projects cleared, ₹8.68 lakh crore in proposed investments, 5.25 lakh jobs targeted. Of these, 148 projects have already broken ground.

The marquee names that are already operationalising investments
-JSW Steel's ₹1.25 lakh crore plant ( Odisha's largest-ever investment) is coming up at Jagatsinghpur, the exact site where POSCO failed.
-POSCO itself has re-entered in a JV with JSW. ArcelorMittal-Nippon is acquiring land for a 14 MTPA plant in Kendrapada.
-Vedanta is back with a ₹1 lakh crore pipeline across alumina, aluminium and power. Intel and 3DGS just signed a $3.3 billion chip substrate MoU.
-Paradip economic corridor has a ₹5,000 crore central grant backing it.

So what essentially changed? Relentless execution focus, bottleneck reviews twice a month, faster clearances, continuous investor engagement.

Odisha is attempting to shape itself beyond a mineral economy. It's trying to become serious industrial geography.

Chhattisgarh sits on 20% of India iron ore and ships most of it through Vizag port, 597 km away on broken two-lane roads.

That same trip on this expressway drops to 464 km and half the time. Every hour saved on a mineral truck is money saved on the landed cost of steel.

India logistics cost just fell below 8% of GDP for the first time, down from 14% a few years ago. But in real term i think it still 9 to 12%.

Expressways like this one are doing the heavy lifting behind that number. Cheaper freight means cheaper manufacturing, and that shows up in export pricing.

This corridor cuts through Dandakaranya and the Eastern Ghats, some of India poorest tribal districts in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

₹10,000 crore of the ₹16,500 crore budget is being spent inside Odisha alone. A six-lane road through Koraput and Kondagaon does not just move goods.

It moves people from low-income pockets to industrial zones around Vizag and Raipur.

Manufacturing clusters need steady Supply Chain of everything

India manufacturing push has a timing problem. Factories need power, roads, ports, and rail from the day they open, not five years later.

This expressway was proposed in 2014, approved in 2017, and construction started only in late 2022. It is now expected to finish by December 2026. That is 12 years from idea to road.

China builds corridors like this in three. India capital expenditure on infra is at record highs, but the execution cycle still drags.

Now that the key eastern states have come under one party rule, the Eastern Zonal Council - covering Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Bengal - should be converted into a dedicated funding and nodal authority on the lines of MDoNER.

DPIIT must also establish extension offices in Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi & Bhubaneswar... given its critical role in industrial promotion & FDI facilitation.
