“It was liberating to be in control of myself, while just letting myself be free,” she recalls.

Axita (@StillAmAx) never imagined that taking a specially sanctioned leave from her desk at the State Bank of India (@TheOfficialSBI) for a remote village in Tamil Nadu would change the way she sees the world.

An employee of SBI, she was intrigued by the SBI Youth for India Fellowship because it promised both autonomy and the chance to create real social impact. This journey bought her to a rural village, where she partnered with Dhan Foundation (@FoundationDhan) to conserve Sacred Groves, ancient forest areas revered by locals for their spiritual significance, preserving biodiversity and their traditions.

Each day in the village was its own learning experience. As she learned to live within the local customs and even started to look at the world through the eyes of the villagers, Axita started to unlearn paradigms established long before, and began to understand a greater sense of empathy and purpose, lessons that continue to guide her in her work at SBI today.
