@ColectiveSplonk@jakonian that I acted similarly (pointing at things & grunting instead of saying words). The ability to hear sound is much less useful than being able to understand sound, which is, imo, the real delineation between whether someone is hearing or deaf. (2/2)
@ColectiveSplonk@jakonian Real answer: it’s super hard to determine if a kid is deaf if they have any level of residual hearing, & most deaf people can hear, just not enough to be useful. My parents didn’t figure it out until I was 2, & only because my aunt used to teach at a deaf school & thought (1/2)
@estratgen The actual reason for this, iirc, is that no two registered horses can have the same name. Something normal, like “Bob,” is already taken, so names must keep getting stranger. This is why most horses have 3 names— their official name, the name on their stall, and their nickname.
@Ger_Morden@TheLastNeocon@Siwelthelongboi Also, run fans if you have them & you’re in a room, and don’t go out in the middle of the day during super hot days— instead, go out around sunrise or sunset & do whatever you have to.
@Ger_Morden@TheLastNeocon@Siwelthelongboi Some actual advice for dealing with heat, though: open all doors and windows at night, close as soon as the sun comes up & draw the curtains to prevent sunlight from coming in. Freeze soaked rags in the freezer that you can put on your forehead if you need to cool down quick.
@quilssachent@LucBernard Here’s some documentaries made by Deaf organizations on the topic!:

I’d also advise checking out Bob McCullough’s weekly Deaf Talkabout column in the Belfast Telegraph, which started in 1983.
@N1IZZYFAN@shayxcriss Not always! When I saw Hamilton, there were two guys behind me yapping in Russian through the whole first act who seemed confused and left at intermission, but of the 25ish other West End/off WE shows I’ve seen post-Covid, I had no problems with the audience.
@Lina_zzurro@sanhw4lvr I totally agree with your point about the Emcee, which is why I’m kinda iffy on the direction the current London production of Cabaret went with him, where he becomes a representation of Germany. To me, Fraulein Schneider already fills that role in a much more accurate fashion.
@Lina_zzurro@sanhw4lvr Yes! I saw the movie first, and then I saw the stage production, and had no clue who Fraulein Schneider or Herr Schultz was, which is wild given that Schneider is genuinely the most important character in the show. I have so much to say about her as a representation of Germany.
@a_fellow_of I would argue that experimental archaeology is where this gap gets bridged, though, because it so often involves trying to find living craftsmen with very specific skill sets in order to understand what people were doing in the past.
@RVanderblight@b1ondeath He allegedly had a threesome with James Dean and Eartha Kitt. Also, have you seen that audition tape where he asks James Dean to kiss him, and Dean says “not here”?
