Co-producer of "1,300 Men: Memphis Strike '68" video series created w/ @TheRoot based on interviews of Memphis sanitation strikers & their families #1300men
This project is dedicated to David and Carol Lynn Yellin. We hope they are smiling down on the legacy of their work for truth and justice. And this is also dedicated to Alvin Turner, our original interview and in our hearts always #1300men
My dear friend and mentor #RevJamesLawson has died. I will say more later. He was a titan of justice and love. Since 2020, I have been working with him on his memoir, Nonviolent, to be published next year. His legacy will live on.
My father didn’t pass away.
He was assassinated.
A 1967 poll reflected that he was one of the most hated men in America.
Most hated.
Many who quote one #MLK line, tweet egregious AI photos of him, and evoke him to deter justice actually despise #TheInconvenientKing.
50 years ago, 16-year-old Larry Payne woke up to march for justice with the #1300Men; instead he was gunned down by a Memphis cop.
Police brutality has been with us forever. @StrikingVoices
50 years ago today—Martin Luther King Jr.’s first and only march in Memphis, and the last march of his all-too-brief life.
Black men, their wives, and their children refused to be silenced, despite the oppressive tactics of the state. @StrikingVoices#1300Men#MLK50
@nhannahjones Please see our work in Memphis preserving the first-hand stories of 1968 sanitation strikers and their wives and children. These are the men MLK died supporting. #1300men https://t.co/bA04Vq5aj3
Last, but definitely not least, give a warm welcome to Hope Azeda, Julian Aguon, and Emily Yellin. Want to learn more? check out our website! https://t.co/FQBg4eVi5c
Although you won’t find #EmmettTill's story in the timeline of American History, his kidnapping and murder at age 14 represents one of the most inhumane injustices committed against an innocent young man in this country.
Today we will honor him on his 80th Birthday.
#EmmettTill80
#BobMoses has left us. 😞He has joined a new band of brothers and sisters in a circle of trust.
But after sixty years on the frontlines of the freedom struggle, he left us stronger, he left us wiser, he left us better organized, he left us better people.
Honor him. Fight on.
Congress has passed no major pro-union legislation since Republicans gutted labor protections after WWII. It's no surprise companies keep winning. https://t.co/SMifZdlzpq
53 years ago today.
One week after my 5th birthday.
You were gone.
Assassinated for answering a call to conscience, for speaking truth to power, for being a drum major for justice who sought to rid the world of racism, militarism and poverty.
I miss you. Still. Always.
Contributed a story on an amazing Memphis public defender from @DefendShelbyCo to this @washingtonpost project on workers who can’t work from home. All these stories are worth a read and the photos bring it all to life. Read and share.
Be careful not to confuse nonviolence with peaceful protest.
Nonviolence is strategic.
It creates tension to bring attention to injustice.
With love at its center and the Beloved Community as its goal, nonviolence agitates.
It is not simply marching without physical violence.
Come for the environmental racism, stay for the mute politicians, opaque permit process & Black homeowners' (futile?) fight to keep the latest industrial development from destroying their property values. A🧵

@MCONLEY10 Thank you for remembering the 68 strikers. There are some men in Nola with a similar fight right now. Just thought you would like to know. #iamaman https://t.co/F8eFUPCmu5
