Good morning, Uganda.
Yesterday marked another major milestone in Uganda’s science, technology, innovation, and industrialisation journey.
Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, Minister in the Office of the President for Science, Technology and Innovation, officially handed over a fully electric 42-seater Kayoola EVS and a DC charging station to Busitema University.
This makes Busitema University the second university in Uganda, after Makerere University, to own a locally manufactured electric bus.
A strong vote of confidence in Uganda’s homegrown innovation and a bold step towards clean mobility, sustainable transport, and industrial transformation.

#PolicyRoundtable on Uganda’s Mining Sector, held under the Training, Equipping and Nurturing to Thrive #TENT Grant Initiative, brought together key stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and development partners to discuss strategies for unlocking the full potential of the country’s mining industry. The initiative is implemented by @giz_uganda under the Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Uganda Programme and co-funded by the European Union and the German Government.
@EUinUG
Uganda’s mining sector holds immense potential to drive industrialisation, support the global green energy transition, and contribute significantly to economic transformation. Despite contributing only about 2.2% to the country’s GDP, Uganda is richly endowed with critical minerals including rare earth elements, graphite, nickel, copper, cobalt, and iron ore, which are increasingly essential for renewable energy technologies and global manufacturing value chains.
Speaking during the engagement, Henry Mukasa of GIZ highlighted the critical role of artisanal and small-scale mining #ASM which accounts for nearly 90% of Uganda’s mineral production and employs approximately 60% of the sector’s workforce. He noted that women constitute almost half of ASM participants, making the subsector a vital source of livelihoods, economic inclusion, and community development across the country.
Through a €1.25 million programme running until 2027, GIZ is supporting efforts to improve mining sector governance, strengthen the investment climate, expand access to geological information, and promote constructive policy dialogue. The programme is also advancing the formalisation of artisanal miners through cooperative development, business skills training, access to finance, and the adoption of responsible mining practices.
Additionally, ongoing mineral value-chain analyses covering strategic minerals such as rare earths, graphite, tungsten, tin, phosphate, and nickel are expected to identify opportunities for domestic value addition. These efforts will support Uganda’s ambition to move beyond raw mineral exports, maximise economic returns from its mineral resources, and enhance competitiveness in regional and global markets. #UCEM
🚨Day 1 in Ntungamo | TENT 2026
This week, the Training, Equipping and Nurturing to Thrive #TENT Initiative brought together over 80 tin miners in Ntungamo, including a strong representation of women miners, for a day of learning, collaboration, and empowerment.
Opening the session, Mr. Owomugisha, LC1 Chairman of Ruhaama, welcomed the team and commended efforts to improve miners' livelihoods through cooperative development. He noted that while progress has been made with the registration of miners' cooperatives in the district, continued training and support are essential to strengthen them.
#UCEM CEO, Mr. Asiimwe @humfas highlighted the role of the TENT Initiative in advancing the formalization and professionalization of Uganda’s Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining sector, positioning miners to operate sustainably and contribute more meaningfully to the economy.
The day's training focused on the importance, benefits, values, and principles of cooperatives, helping miners better understand how cooperatives can drive collective growth and opportunity. Participants also received a financial inclusion session from @pearlbank_ug which introduced the WENDI digital banking platform as a safe and convenient way to save and transact.
Building knowledge. Strengthening cooperatives. Empowering miners.

During the panel discussion on “Expanding Bilateral Trade and Removing Market Barriers,” Humphrey Asiimwe, CEO of Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals, highlighted key opportunities and challenges shaping trade and investment between Uganda and Zambia.
He pointed out gaps in logistics, connectivity, and energy linkages, noting that while Zambia faces growing energy demand, Uganda has surplus energy capacity that can be leveraged through strengthened regional connectivity and cooperation.
Mr. Asiimwe also emphasized the importance of jointly developing policies and reforms, particularly in local content frameworks, stressing that these strategies should extend beyond national levels to regional blocs such as the East African Community and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa.
He further underscored the value of partnerships and regional collaboration, citing the East African Crude Oil Pipeline as a strong example of successful cross-border cooperation. He also called for the establishment of business hubs to enable shared knowledge, skills transfer, and innovation between the two countries.
In addition, he highlighted Uganda’s vast investment opportunities in agriculture, mining, tourism, and energy, as well as the country’s growing capacity in local content development, investor-friendly environment, accessible markets, and relatively streamlined land acquisition processes for foreign investors.

🚨Day 2 of the Training, Equipping and Nurturing to Thrive (TENT) Initiative focused on the formation of a cooperative to serve both gold and iron ore miners in Nyanamo.
Through group discussions, miners shared the challenges they face, particularly the difficult access to mining sites and the barriers this creates for their operations and growth.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development #MEMD commended local mining leaders for their efforts in mobilizing miners and promoting the active participation of women in the training sessions, an important step towards building inclusive and sustainable mining communities.
Strengthening cooperation, amplifying miners' voices, and creating pathways for growth remain at the heart of the TENT Initiative.
