Economist at @nbccambodia. Inflation, Money, Pol. Econ. of Central Banking, Financialisation in EMs, Digital Payments. Previously @UMassEcon @BristolUniEcon
My (first-ever) peer-reviewed paper, co-authored with @DanielaGabor, tries to make sense of the parallel rise of techfin and state-controlled digital infras like Aadhaar in developing countries. https://t.co/pSJrn5JSBw
Excited to announce that I have relocated to Phnom Penh to join the @nbccambodia's Institute for Banking Studies as an Economics Specialist. I would love to connect with others in the country/region.
where I spare with Andy Haldane on state of British macrofinancial politics, the long shadow of the @bankofengland gilt vigilante moment during Truss mini-budget, Labour's turn to derisking, with great moderation from @piercepenniless
In an op-ed for @AJEnglish, I argue that as Trump’s policies undermine Global North alliances, the Global South has the chance to do away with exploitative economic relations (drawing on @ProgIntl's work to build a new international economic order).

Unemployment weakens governments. Inflation kills. The politically destructive power of inflation had been forgotten. Standard policy tools left us unprepared and fueled inequality. The re-election of Trump should serve as a warning to all democrats.
My first @nytopinion. 1/
Right now price gouging is illegal everywhere, but because it is state instead of federal, we have price gouging laws for the deli, and de facto price gouging immunity for the producers, distributors, the big suppliers.
We need Harris' price gouging ban to stop the stealing.
Eliminating hunger used to be seen as the most feasible Sustainable Development Goal. But in the global food price crisis, 15 years of progress have been lost without a lack of global food supply. Food inflation is still high. @ProSyn we urge to expand the stabilization toolbox.
Developing countries must accumulate regional buffer stocks of staples and coordinate capital-account-management policies to protect themselves against food-price shocks, argue @IsabellaMWeber, @Jayati1609, and @SudeepKJain. https://t.co/0Q1pC4RCc2
"One major reason for persistent food-price inflation in the Global South, despite cooling agricultural prices worldwide, is currency depreciation, which has made imported food and fuel more expensive." @IsabellaMWeber@SudeepKJain@Jayati1609@ProSyn https://t.co/cMH5hqKHc0
Most of my papers are coauthored with my students. Here is the brilliant bunch together with my two new postdocs @SudeepKJain and @Punk_Keynes.
Couldn’t be prouder or happier with this growing team!
Economics might be a cartel but there are departments who never joined the club.
“There is an entire living, breathing, refreshing world of economics beyond what Robert Heilbroner referred to as the rigor mortis of economic orthodoxy.”
@khand154@FT
“[T]he grocery industry, as represented by four of its largest players, became more profitable in the pandemic, & it has stayed that way for a couple of years at least. It is a good guess that price increases in excess of cost increases have played a role in this.” @rbrtrmstrng
Cringing at the amount of classism being spouted as anti-racism… the only people who benefit when you mock working class white folk for lack of qualifications or appearance etc are the middle and upper classes who orchestrate and sanction white supremacy from positions of power
Global computing systems have been transformed over a short 15 year period.
Today the systems critical to the functioning of airlines/airports, hospital, banks, stores, news media and transport systems have all been disrupted.
IT is terribly boring - until nothing works.
