Key points in President @HassanSMohamud’s speech following the ratification of the Defense and Economic Agreement with Turkey:

⁃Turkey has been helping Somalia with humanitarian support; the visit by @RTErdogan in August 2011 was a game-changer in fighting famine
⁃Turkey was the first country to provide Somalia with direct budgetary support.
⁃Turkey set up biggest overseas military training facility in Somalia to training thousands of Somali forces to fight terrorism
⁃This new agreement covers maritime defence and economic cooperation
⁃Agreement not against Ethiopia.
⁃Somalia doesn’t want to fight against any other country
⁃Somalia doesn’t want to see foreign countries fighting within its territory
⁃Agreement will fight piracy, terrorism, illegal fishing, drugs and illegal maritime activities
⁃Work on this agreement has been ongoing on sometime. It’s not related to the tension with Ethiopia.

The US Envoy to the Horn of Africa Mike Hammer says there are already “troubling indications” that al-Shabaab is using the MoU signed by Ethiopia and Somaliland to generate new fighters.

“We are particularly concerned that the increasing tension over the MoU threatens to disrupt the fight that Somalis, along with Africans, and regional and international partners including the US are waging against al-Shabaab,” he said speaking at Thursday’s IGAD Summit in Kampala.
