Lee Jae-myung is now attacking the judiciary. This morning, I received the following from a friend in Korea:

“Today in South Korea, the Democratic Party is pressuring Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae to resign.

The reason is clear.

Currently, Lee Jae-myung has received a remand from the Supreme Court in his Public Official Election Act violation case, effectively overturning the acquittal he received in the second trial. In other words, the Supreme Court judged that the Seoul High Court's acquittal in the second trial was inappropriate and ordered the Seoul High Court to determine an appropriate sentence and reissue the ruling.

However, the Seoul High Court effectively ignored the Supreme Court's order and postponed the ruling with the absurd reason that ‘Candidate Lee Jae-myung must be guaranteed a fair election opportunity.’

After winning the presidential election, Lee Jae-myung invoked Article 84 of the Constitution (Presidential Immunity from Prosecution) to effectively pardon himself for all ongoing trials. The Seoul High Court also cooperated, halting the proceedings. However, Article 84 of the Constitution states that ‘The President shall not be subject to criminal prosecution during the term of office, except in the case of rebellion or treason,’ which applies only to crimes committed during the presidential term. It does not authorize the suspension of trials that began before the presidency. Nevertheless, Lee Jae-myung halted all trials.

Domestically, there has been ongoing debate regarding the interpretation of Article 84.

The Public Official Election Act case is particularly critical for Lee Jae-myung. The Supreme Court had already overturned the second trial’s acquittal and remanded the case with instructions to consider a guilty verdict. If the remand trial results in a conviction, Lee Jae-myung’s presidential election will be nullified. This is precisely why Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party are pressuring Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, who was involved in the ruling, to resign. This constitutes a blatant political attack on the judiciary and is, in effect, an act of dictatorship.”

“President Lee Jae-myung has banned the anti-China rallies led by the Korean conservative youth group Freedom University in Myeong-dong, Seoul, near the Chinese embassy. He labeled these demonstrations not as freedom of expression but as ‘hate speech’ and ‘disturbances.’ He even criminalized actions such as tearing up the Chinese national flag, the Five-Star Red Flag, which were symbolic protests against China.

Nevertheless, on September 13 (KST), anti-American groups such as Candlelight Action were allowed to hold rallies in front of the U.S. Embassy without any restrictions or condemnation. These groups also staged protests criticizing the United States over the recent crackdown in Georgia on illegal workers, claiming that it was a violation of their rights.

They went so far as to denounce U.S. authorities for the arrest of Korean workers, shouting slogans like ‘Condemn the U.S. for hostage-taking’ and ‘Gangster Trump, get off the earth.’ Protesters ripped up large placards bearing President Donald Trump’s face and smashed mannequins with hammers in anti-American performances.”
