Emergency Appeal Launched:

Hurricane Melissa — the strongest storm in Jamaica’s history — has left a trail of devastation across the island. With winds up to 280 km/h and torrential rains, nearly 1.9 million people are affected. Homes destroyed, roads blocked, families displaced.

The Jamaica Red Cross, with support from the IFRC, is on the ground delivering emergency shelter, food, clean water, and cash assistance. But the needs are immense.

The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for 19 million CHF to scale up life-saving aid and recovery efforts.

This is a critical moment. We must act swiftly to reach the most impacted communities.

Category 5 Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica, near New Hope, as the third strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean.

The humanitarian impact of Melisa is expected to be extensive. Melissa may also bring life-threatening rains and winds, as well as flash flooding and landslides to Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos. Red Cross local teams and the IFRC are working together to prepare for and respond to the humanitarian impact.

The @IFRC is also preparing to launch an emergency appeal very soon to support the people affected by #HurricaneMelissa.
