A division bench of the Bombay High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad has strongly reprimanded the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), warning of contempt action and jail time for concerned officials over their rigid handling of eatery licences. The High Court vacated the FDA's suspension orders and cleared the reopening of five restaurants situated at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) premises in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) after a fresh inspection revealed the outlets were 88% compliant with food safety regulations. Criticizing the regulator for acting in "undue haste" and adopting a pedantic rather than pragmatic approach over third-party operations by M/s Shirke Infrastructure, the bench pointedly questioned the department: "Why do we say don't kill a mosquito with a sword? Do you feel you are a lord and you can do anything?".
