Hi! The Modern Surgeon Life was created to promote holistic living among physicians and surgeons by highlighting medicine, wellness, relationships, and lifestyle elements like art, fashion, travel and more. Visit us on IG and YouTube for great content!
This poll tracks with published data on physician self-care. For those who don’t see a PCP/GP regularly, why not? Some commented on reasons (young & healthy, difficulty finding/scheduling). Just curious about choices & barriers in health maintenance for physicians & surgeons.
I just want to say that you are all amazing. In my head, this was a question about meeting etiquette. The discussion became one about coaching presentation skills to learners. 💪🏻work!
Settle a long-standing debate for me. Your mentee is on the podium at a conference, having presented data you worked on together. A question comes from the audience & they struggle with, or can’t answer, the question. @topknife@macky_neal @DissanaikeMD You:
@hayfarani@SurgeonModern@topknife @DissanaikeMD As part of #1 - practice. Organize practice sessions w/ broad audiences to anticipate questions. Also teach them the ART of answering a different question instead of the one asked 😉. “That is a great ?…a related one that I often think about is..” @APDEEB nailed it this AM 😁
@SurgeonModern@topknife@macky_neal @DissanaikeMD 3-tiered plan:
1. Give them, ahead of the talk, the confidence to answer: they likely know the data better than the one asking
2. Tell them they can say "I do not know" & call on you as a real last resort
3. Connect later, along with them, with the person who asked to discuss
@DimDamask@topknife@macky_neal @DissanaikeMD Was going to say this once the results were in, but you beat me to it. We prepare thoroughly & set expectations in advance. One thing we acknowledge is that one might not know the answer to every question & having the courage & honesty to say “I don’t know” is OK.

@macky_neal@topknife @DissanaikeMD I don’t want to bias the results, but it sounds like we were trained by similar folks & share a common philosophy.
It’s been things like research that seemed only to be done to fund the next project. Leadership positions that weren’t all that interesting, etc. And I had allowed these things to pull me away from my family, my health, etc. Anyone else feel that? (2/2)
Appreciate all the comments on this thread. This was the closest to what I was getting at in that I have had times when I’ve looked around & wondered why I was doing what I was doing. Not the patient care, as that seems to ground me. (1/2)
@CPark_MD@SurgeonModern@HarvardBiz @MackenzieCookMD @EcmoNinja @RedMDND I agree. There is always going to be overlap.
The problem is when it’s your ONLY identity and you wake up thinking “who am I?”
My identity is fundamentally intertwined w being a surgeon - but I also find myself happiest when I create space for exercise, romance and cats 💕
Thanks! It’s a really fun diversion & I enjoy the opportunity to let people see what I do when I’m not in the hospital & share some things that I’ve found helpful in my own life journey. Hope people will take a look!

@SurgeonModern@HarvardBiz @MackenzieCookMD @EcmoNinja @RedMDND It’s almost impossible not to have your surgical career define some of your identity. If we were not saddened by our failures and buoyed by our wins how unnatural would that be? You all can see my annoying love for running, cats & coffee so thanks for staying 😂
@CPark_MD@HarvardBiz @MackenzieCookMD @EcmoNinja @RedMDND I share more thoughts on IG, but in my mind (& my experience), motive is the difference. If my identity is that of a caring person & I apply that to patient care, great. If I become enmeshed to the high of recognition or the $ it brings, burnout results.

Been a while, but wanted to start a conversation about this article from @HarvardBiz: “What happens when your career becomes your whole identity?” My thoughts on IG, but what do you say, @MackenzieCookMD @CPark_MD@EcmoNinja @RedMDND?
