@MegEllis1215@English_Tchr101 I LOVE the idea of providing time in the master schedule for independent reading! This school-wide practice would really help instill a love of reading throughout the school.

#PCPSChatDT Q6 Yes. we do have class discussions about important issues, but I hope to do more! I loved the authors' discussion of "how talk refines learning." I hope to teach students the skills to participate in conversations. #DL421_DT3
#PCPSChatD Q6 Yes, I do have class discussions and discuss important issues, but I want to do more with my classes! I loved the author's discussion of "how talk refines understanding." I plan to teach students how to fully participate in class conversations. #DL421_DT3
#PCPSChatDT Q2 I prefer to give choice of reading. Each week the students choose books and a reader response question is assigned which is shared with the class. The variation of reading provides great discussion! #DL421_DT3
#PCPSChatDT Q1 I occasionally have students read the same book. This is usually done at the beginning of the school year to help build class unity through reading and discussion of the same book. I provide differentiated skills/creative culminating projects for book. #DL421_DT3
@FRESL1brary@English_Tchr101 Well said! It is so important for students to make those personal connections. It gives reading a strong and meaningful purpose. I like your point that we grow from the text AND each other. pcpschatdt2
@tifray10@English_Tchr101 I really like the idea of having students sketch the aha moment! That would be a fun and creative activity which would prompt a lot of positive and interesting discussion. Thanks #pcpschatdt2
@michvoorhees I totally agree with you! When the text makes that type of impression on a student, it does give reading a purpose. It makes reading come alive. I think sharing books is one of the best ways to encourage students to be lifelong readers. #pcpschatdt2
A4: Occasionally you have students with strong opinions. Creating students who are more compassionate and open-minded will help them see different points of view. This could be very helpful in class discussions. #PCPSChatDT2
A3: We use turn and talk discussions and small group discussions. I like to read books orally and have students write about what they noticed about the story or book. #PCPSChatDT2
A2: Yes! When students think how a text changes them, it could be life changing. Taking things to heart changes who we are and perhaps makes us see things differently. It can also make people more compassionate and change attitudes. #PCPSChatDT2
A1: I think the BHH framework will make students better readers! It would help me teach students how to be responsive and responsible readers. Students will be able to think about what the book gives us, how it makes us feel, and how it changes us. - Very valuable! #PCPSChatDT2
@FRESL1brary@English_Tchr101 I agree! It is through sharing and reflecting that students make connections! I will try to implement that question in my discussions. PCPSChatDT
@MsAngelPOWES @English_Tchr101 I agree and do the same thing thing with my questioning techniques. I plan to try using this question more in the future!

@English_Tchr101 A5: Absolutely! Nonfiction helps you gain knowledge about varied subjects, our world and people in it, while learning about themselves. Some of students prefer nonfiction and are some of my most inquisitive students.
@English_Tchr101 A4: With fake news all around us, we do have to teach students to read responsibly. Reading about current events from Scholastic News is a great way to do this. I think this skill is a work in progress, for sure.
