"तुम याद आये और तुम्हारे साथ ज़माने याद आये" #MehdiHassan
Luna is a small village, 12 kms away from Jhunjhunu city in Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. It is the birthplace of Mehdi Hassan sb who spent his first 20 years in the village before migrating to Pakistan during the event of Partition.
Every time I visit Shekhawati region, I always makes a point to Luna Village, to pay tribute to the place, he was deeply connected with. It always feels like a Haj yatra or a Tirth yatra, a pilgrimage for people like us who consider music as their religion. I always made a point to visit his childhood friend Narayan ji who we lost a month ago at 102yrs, as he did carry a lort of strong memories of Mehdi Hassan sb. I was also fortunate to present a docu-feature on Mehdi Hassan sb at his birth place.
Luna means Namak/Salt, and the name is derives as you can find Natural Salt in its sand as well as in the ground water. Even the tea carries that tinge of salt in its unique flavor. You can find the same salt in Mehdi Hassan's voice & his singing. He always loved Rajasthan & Luna for being his birth place .
After Independence, Mehdi Hassan came to India for the very first time in 1977-78 and was given the honor of State Guest. A dinner & ghazal evening was organised at the residence of the then Foreign Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Mehdi Hassan saab presented desire to visit his birth place.
Government made all arrangements including a proper road to his village. On the way to his Village, there was a small temple. Mehdi Hassan sb stopped the car steeped out side and started weeping at the entrance. It was the temple where he used to sing Bhajans in his childhood. And this was not all, he started wallowing in the sand like a kid, making his own son amused & nervous on this act. Just shows how he loved & missed his #Motherland . The day the soil of Luna witness and embraced the salt of tears of his son. #Mothersday #MehdiHassan
I was fortunate to see MehdiHassan sb live in his last visit to Rajasthan on the occasion of first International Rajasthan Conclave in 2000. Mehdi Hassan sb came and performed at Albert Hall with Reshma, Jagjit Singh & Pt. Jasraj. Since I was working with Govt of Rajasthan then, we arranged the first of its kind web streaming of the event for people around the world. A night of bliss & to remember forever.
Today we just have a mazaar in the backyard of Govt High School & nothing else to mark the significance of the legend. With Narayan Singh jo gone last month, there is no connect left of remembrance of those early & formative years of a legend.
Mehdi Hasan still lives in the village of his childhood, where music flows in the air, in every drop of water, just like Mehdi Hasan's ghazals, with a unique amalgamation of the fragrance of the soil of the desert, the sweetness of the notes and salt of the poetry.
How I wish @MinOfCultureGoI or @RajGovOfficial to take a note of the village of Luna and to develop it as a musical pilgrimage with a Museum & Centre for Music of Rajasthan & a symbol of Cultural Heritage & Harmony @ashokgehlot51@RajCMO@DIPRRajasthan@nirupamakotru@avinashkalla@omthanvi@8PMnoCM@dushyantlive
