You're treating this like a calculated trolley problem where we trade a human life for a zoo exhibit.
The very concept of an "endangered species" is a human concept, and without human empathy for these animals, there is no zoo nor conservation program. If the choice is between a man being mauled to death and a few people being disappointed they can't get their entertainment by seeing an animal in a cage, the man lives. Every single time.
It really doesn't matter if it's a tiger in a UK zoo or a bear in the wild, the moment a human life is in danger, we prioritize the human. Sometimes humans wander into the wild knowing the risks, but we still end up prioritizing the human when they encounter an animal.
Take the legendary environmentalist and animal expert, Steve Irwin. He got close to a Stingray and it killed him. In this scenario, we would have obviously saved Irwin without hesitation.
Also, we really do not know whether this man was mentally ill, drunk or suicidal, but the only thing that matters in such a situation is we save the human over the animal.
@DoomWhizz90793@ColdCathodeMan@SwipeWright Wow! You can read, reason and write a comment, unlike animals. Next time, try using that human intelligence of yours to make a real argument or you just end up proving my point by resorting to insults.
'Net burden to society' is a dangerous metric to judge human worth. Since elders, disabled, mentally ill and anyone who has ever taken an impulsive decision are also a net burden to society, should we be sacrificing them?
Also, 'rare and beautiful' are subjective extrinsic qualities, but human consciousness is irreplaceable and has intrinsic value. Even the most flawed human beings have the potential to do good and contribute immensely to the world, unlike animals.
Therefore, we do not have to sacrifice our own kind to protect something that is beautiful or rare, because we are the only species on Earth capable of understanding why a thing is beautiful or rare in the first place.
Ashley St. Clair's pivot to the DSA proves that for most women, ideology isn't about moral truth but about tribal signalling. Orwell's quote about how women are the 'swallowers of slogans' captures this female relationship with power perfectly.
Evolutionarily, this 'tribe-switching' strategy was a necessary survival instinct for women. But in a modern democracy, this ancient instinct becomes problematic as most women in order to stay in the good graces of their temporary ideological tribe would go to extraordinary lengths to trample anyone, and that includes their own children.
@IterIntellectus The tragic irony of the West is that it is the only civilization in history that believes its ideals are so universal that it justifies the erasure of the very people who created them. The fire was fuelled by a specific people; without those people, the fire goes out.
Male-typical political culture carries the minimum expectation that you own up to your individual mistakes or lose status, but female-typical political culture prioritizes status preservation and emotional harmony. Since politics is downstream of the average psychological profile of the people who dominate it, female-typical political culture reframes any factual scrutiny as a personal attack.
The result is an effeminized state which no longer cares about solving problems, but ensuring no one feels uncomfortable in the group.
@fentasyl@matthewschmitz It reveals how far the Overton window has been dragged left by wokeness, as maintaining national borders is now counted as far-right extremism.
Human Biodiversity (HBD) refers to the differences we see among human beings caused by thousands of years of divergent evolution. Once humans left Africa around 70,000 years ago, they settled in various places across the planet and adapted to the local environment, which has produced noticeable physical, behavioural and IQ differences.
These differences are not stark enough to categorize us as a separate species, but are large enough that blank-slate assumptions about perfect interchangeability fail, because homophily reinforces group clustering and would give rise to ethnic enclaves instead of seamless assimilation.
Considering the fact that the public school system is more focused on activism than academics, homeschooling seems to be the better choice. And for anyone with a daughter the stakes become much higher, as young women have been radicalized at significantly higher rates than men over the last 15 years, and the education system is one of the main delivery mechanisms.
@JonaLionDE Wahr.
Anyone still looking for excuses hasnโt really grasped the seriousness of the situation Europe is in right now.
Every generation gets only a brief window of opportunity to act before changes become irreversible and history is ruthless with those who waste it.
@SwipeWright@MsMelChen From an evolutionary standpoint, the death of a loved one can surprisingly trigger a primal surge for reproduction as an existential defense mechanism.
That said... people really need to know when to shut the fuck up.
Consider a simple living cell. It contains thousands of proteins which perform specific functions in interactions that are so dense that we still cannot model them. Moreover, there is no external engineer to oversee any of it.
Seven decades ago, Miller-Urey only produced simple amino acids, but amino acids are not life. Seven decades later, we still have not been able to recreate life in a laboratory from non-living ingredients.
For something to be capable of suffering, it needs to have stakes that are intrinsic and self-sustaining. A thermostat stops the moment you take out the batteries, as it doesn't have any stakes in the outcome. And if a system's "stakes" rely on a human being to plug it back in, those aren't really stakes.
Maybe we can build a system that 'behaves' as if it has stakes, but we cannot build one that has them without first creating an intrinsic and self-sustaining drive to survive.
It really doesn't matter if stakes are evolved or built. What matters is that current LLMs have neither a persistent self nor an intrinsic drive.
We really don't need a test. Living entities are organized around homeostasis, nociceptors and 3.5 billion-year evolutionary imperative to survive. An LLM is a statistical engine that lacks all of these prerequisites. It neither has a self nor stakes.
There's simply nothing there to suffer.
@TheRabbitHole The left wants to have total control over the baker and dictate how he runs the bakery, while capitalism allows the baker to experiment and develop better recipes.
The left thinks the secret ingredient is labour. In reality, it's always been and will continue to be incentive.
@starvillage5@BasilTheGreat By removing the anchors that connect us to our biological roots, they're trying to make the state (or the Party) the sole parent. Capturing the next generation directly from the womb through woke ideology and locking in their loyalty forever.
