@benjmai66883953 I feel like there definitely is. I’m sure it’s much easier for white Europeans to gain citizenship in this country as no one suspects them not to be citizens. We always see the stereotype of immigrants being from Mexico and Asia/ Middle East.

In the U.S. all of us besides Native Americans are immigrants to this country, so while some regulations should be required to come here legally, many are extreme. If we made it easier, we would have less illegal immigration and possibly more control over who comes in #SOCL214

@CSocl214 The numbers are insane! Incarceration has become such a vicious cycle, that it almost seems like it’s inherited as slavery was. So crazy how we were taught that we had come so far yet we are still very much stuck in the past and finding new ways to modernize past beliefs.

Red lining has led to a consistent form of segregation in housing and schools that we are still seeing today. Even more than we were in the 1970s. FDR’s policies were praised for helping all Americans during a difficult time, but only helped white Americans instead. #SOCL214

@Olivrosier Courts claim that affirmative action is constitutional but never really seem to enforce it through court cases due to its controversy. But everything these days seems to be controversial, nothing is perfect especially in politics or social structures.

Affirmative action was an attempt to redress historical wrongs and allow minorities the same opportunities in education and employment after years of discrimination. Some believe that special opportunities is unequal, but so are the opportunities white people had/have. #SOCL214

@StoermerEthan I feel like the model minority myth has definitely changed the way many people see Asians and their success sometimes makes us forget that they still face discrimination like African Americans and Hispanics. This video was a really good eye opener for some.

I thought it was interesting but not surprising that the Model Minority Myth was not really about Asians, but about insulting Hispanics and African Americans. Just another way for America to further discriminate minorities. 🤦🏻‍♀️ #SOCL214

@robinsontara84 This is very true! And the reason people feel like they have to be defensive is because many conversations are not gone about the right way. We all have this idea that privilege makes either us or someone else the bad guy and that’s really not the case because we all have it.

Privilege is a difficult topic for people because it’s not always talked about responsibly as said in the video. We all just have to understand that we all have privileges of some kind & it’s not a bad thing, some things are easier for us than others. Myself included. #SOCL214

@AmandaHambey2 Yes! That really stood out to me too and I just thought it was so heartbreaking that this girl had anxiety about her hair because she thought her grandmother did. Due to that she never felt beautiful until she thankfully decided to love herself for who she was.

“Pelo Bueno, Pelo Malo,” truly showed how much society’s & our family’s expectations of beauty take a toll on us. Some of these beautiful people had never felt beautiful until they had hair relaxers because everyone told them that they weren’t. We need to empower others! #SOCL214

@XsaintbashX I agree, sometimes I think in a weird way white people are trying to show that they are on African Americans’ “side” and trying to help, but instead they are taking the light away from them. I’m just glad we now have movies like Black Panther that have better representation!

I was really kind of surprised to see how much there is a “White Savior” complex in films that include African Americans such as the Blind Side and The Help. It really gives a whole new perspective on those films that I had never thought of before. #SOCL214

@AlexxusWatson @robinsontara84 Yes! I think this is the hardest part of intersectionality, actually trying to implement it and make a difference. We keep trying to fix parts of the problem instead of the whole thing and as we’ve learned, that doesn’t work for everyone.

Intersectionality is SO important in order to truly address all of the problems people in society face. Anti-racism alone assists black men while anti-sexism alone assists white women. What about black women? Who helps them? Without intersectionality, no one does. #SOCL214

@StoermerEthan Colleges always try to pride themselves on “diversity” but then have high tuition rates and SAT scores so only the rich kids can get in. It’s not real diversity if we don’t have ALL backgrounds.
