The escalating threat of the deadly Congo virus, known as Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), has prompted the declaration of a health emergency in Balochistan's hospitals. In response to the increasing cases, a meeting chaired by Balochistan's Caretaker Chief Minister, Ali Mardan Domki, was convened in Quetta. With 44 reported cases of the virus in Balochistan, the decision was made to take swift action. The health emergency involves close monitoring by divisional commissioners, district house officers, and livestock officers. Additionally, a ban on private slaughterhouses in Quetta for two weeks, enforced under Section 144, aims to control the situation. This directive restricts animal slaughter to designated slaughterhouses situated away from urban areas. CM Domki has also instructed the provincial livestock department to immediately disinfect cattle markets.
The virus appears to have originated from a patient in #Harnai, with the affected ward sealed and other departments disinfected under special measures. Tragic incidents, including the deaths of a doctor and a suspected patient in Quetta, have occurred whereas two healthcare workers have been transferred to Karachi via air ambulance. The interim Balochistan setup has recognized the deceased doctor as a martyr and extended benefits to his surviving family. This year, there has been a notable surge in Congo virus cases, with 41 patients admitted to the hospital and 17 fatalities, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
