Unlike contemporary Westerners, the Japanese do not fetishize rebellion against shared norms in the name of maximal individual freedom.

Contemporary Western media centers on denigrating and subverting the shared norms of other cultures.

Similarly, contemporary Western notions of femininty idealize being a disrespectful whore.

It seems like this approach is absent in Japan and East Asia more generally.

With the rise of China, perhaps we will begin seeing what the East Asianizaion of global culture (including Muslim culture) looks like as opposed to Westernization. Precedents for this exist in Southeast Asia.
