Exactly a year ago, our first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Mary arrived in Adelaide. Named after pioneering South Australian suffragist Mary Lee, our TBM is busy digging underground to build one of the twin 4.5km Southern Tunnels.

First T2D Project shared use bridge opens at Clovelly Park 🎉
The new 200-metre pedestrian and cyclist overpass provides the community with improved access across South Road, without having to navigate the traffic below. It is also the first of five new shared use bridges.
The first of our three TBMs to get underway, Mary has now excavated more than 250 metres of tunnel.

🏗️ Local businesses delivering big lifts at the Brickworks
A new surface-level bridge at the Brickworks is taking shape, with 70 massive concrete planks now in place between Ashwin Parade and West Thebarton Road.
To manage this operation, Wingfield-based Fleurieu Cranes has deployed a 700-tonne mobile crane, the concrete planks have been manufactured by local company Bianco, with another local firm Hallett Group supplying concrete for the support structures.
These concrete planks will form a surface-level bridge to connect West Thebarton Road to Ashwin Parade.
Follow along as this vital connection continues to take shape.

🏗️ What's happening at the Brickworks?
If you’ve driven along South Road recently, you may have spotted massive concrete planks being lowered into place.
By separating northbound and southbound traffic, the Project team has opened up space in the centre of South Road to begin building the diaphragm walls for the Northern Tunnels' entry and exit portals and cut-and-cover structure.
See the before and after images of the T2D construction site near the Brickworks.
With a series of traffic changes, the Northern Construction Precinct is taking shape.

From making history with three large-scale Tunnel Boring Machines now tunnelling simultaneously on the same underground road project, to the open motorway continuing to take shape, there’s lots happening across the Project.

South Road has moved 👀
To make room for the lowered open motorway, sections of South Road have been shifted to a new alignment closer to Richmond Oval.
The open motorway section will be 2.7km long and connect the Northern and Southern tunnels.

📍 Ashwin Parade Intersection
To help improve traffic flow during the construction of the T2D Project, both lanes on Ashwin Parade can now turn left onto South Road.
In an Australian first, two additional Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) purpose-built to excavate cross passages will join the Project. Standing 4.1 metres tall, the fourth and fifth TBMs will construct cross passages every 120 metres, connecting the parallel tunnels.

And the first of two cross passage TBMs has arrived in Adelaide. 🚢
Located every 120 metres, cross passages are a mandatory safety feature which will provide evacuation routes between the parallel tunnels in the unlikely event of an emergency.
💡Did you know?
The T2D Project is the first Australian tunnelling project to use two purpose-built Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to excavate cross passages. Standing at 4.1 metres tall, these are scaled-down versions of our three big TBMs - Mary, Catherine and Elizabeth.
👀 Curious what it's like being inside a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)?
Before TBM Mary set off on her journey underground, we got a sneak peek into the massive machine – weighing approx. 3,500 tonnes and 100-metres long.
