Those who are filing their tax returns for Tax Year 2026 need to be extra careful this time.

The reason is that FBR is moving towards more automated and AI-based scrutiny of tax returns. The system may cross-check information reported by one taxpayer against the information reported by another taxpayer or against data available with banks and other institutions.

For example, if you show a gift received from your father, brother, wife, or any other person, but the donor has not reported the same gift in their own tax return, the system may identify the mismatch and potentially issue a notice.

Similarly, if you show a loan received from Mr. X, but Mr. X's wealth statement does not show a corresponding loan receivable, this could also create a mismatch and may trigger an automated query or notice.

There can be many other situations where information reported by different persons or institutions does not match.

Therefore, before filing your return, make sure that your income, assets, liabilities, gifts, loans, bank balances, and other relevant information are properly reconciled and supported by records.

Don't just file the return—reconcile the information before you file it.
