Africa is often described as a continent rich in natural resources, but the deeper story is about who controls those resources, who profits from them, and how much value remains in African economies after extraction. The continent holds enormous deposits of gold, diamonds, cobalt, copper, uranium, oil, natural gas, platinum, iron ore and other minerals, alongside major agricultural resources such as cocoa, coffee, tea and cotton. These resources have made Africa central to global trade for centuries. Long before modern multinational corporations arrived, African gold, salt, ivory and other commodities were moving through extensive regional and international trade networks. During European colonial rule, however, the extraction of African resources became closely tied to systems designed to benefit colonial powers, with raw materials frequently exported while industrial development and manufacturing remained limited within the colonies.
That history still matters today. Having valuable resources does not automatically make a country wealthy. The real economic power comes from being able to process, manufacture and add value to those resources, create skilled jobs, negotiate strong contracts and ensure that local communities benefit from the wealth beneath their land. A country that exports raw minerals and then imports finished products made from those same materials can capture far less economic value than a country that develops the industries needed to process them. This is why Africa’s resource wealth should not simply be celebrated as proof of abundance. It should also raise questions about ownership, infrastructure, trade agreements, taxation, corruption, industrialization and who ultimately benefits. Africa has never lacked resources. One of the biggest challenges has been turning that enormous wealth into broad and lasting prosperity for the people who live on the continent. #BlackHistory #AfricanHistory #Africa

Rare Red sprite lightning spotted over Salt Lake, Utah (USA) 🌌 ⚡
Late on the night of July 28, 2025, people across northern Utah looked up and witnessed something truly spectacular. Just after 10 PM, a brilliant red lightning display—known as a red sprite—lit up the sky above a thunderstorm near the Great Salt Lake. These eerie, jellyfish-like flashes appeared high above the storm clouds, surprising viewers from Salt Lake City all the way to Logan.
The vivid red lights looked like glowing tendrils stretching down from bright orbs, almost like a glowing waterfall in the sky. While sprites are usually too quick and faint to see with the naked eye, clear skies and the perfect storm conditions made them visible this time—and they didn’t disappoint. Local photographers captured the moment in amazing detail.
Experts believe we might see more of these rare phenomena in the western U.S. as storms become stronger due to changing climate patterns. So if you’re a skywatcher, keep your eyes—and cameras—on the skies. More surprises could be on the way.
Scientists just discovered that twisting ice literally creates energy.
Ice may look cold and quiet—but under pressure, it comes alive electrically.
A new study in Nature Physics reveals that when ice is bent, twisted, or stretched, it generates an electric charge through a process called flexoelectricity. Unlike piezoelectricity, which requires special crystal structures, flexoelectricity occurs in all insulators—meaning even ordinary ice can do it.
Researchers from Spain, China, and the U.S. found that ice’s electrical behavior not only responds to mechanical stress but also changes with temperature in unexpected ways. At ultra-cold conditions, they observed the formation of a ferroelectric surface layer, capable of flipping its polarity like a magnet.
This discovery reshapes our understanding of ice, which has long been considered a passive material. “This paper changes how we view ice,” said lead author Xin Wen, “from a passive material to an active one.” Beyond deepening our knowledge of natural phenomena—like how lightning charges form in storm clouds—it opens up the possibility of ice-based electronics in extreme environments. From flexible sensors to energy-harvesting materials, this once-humble substance might soon play a surprising role in future technologies.
