@FC_Porco_@NolanAnalyst Only expected because Spider-Man's huge opening killed Odyssey's screen count and showtime count. If they had opposite release dates, Odyssey third weekend would have been around $65-70M instead of $51M. We'll have to see if Odyssey can pull some better drops moving forward.
@FC_Porco_@NolanAnalyst Spidey did have a big impact. Odyssey was only down 21-25% from previous weekly performance on the Monday through Wednesday numbers. Thursday through Sunday were all down more than 40% from the previous weekend.
@BlueLobster629@NotBalmung@EisakuOtomo@PunishedTyke Not sure. This weekend was a negative impact. Odyssey was heading for a 25% drop until Spidey arrived and pushed the drop closer to 45%. We will see if Odyssey can recover some of the lost money in future days/weeks.
@NolanAnalyst I would say it did get hurt. In domestic market, Odyssey was heading for a 25% drop this weekend. But ended up closer to 45% due to Spidey's impact.
@Edgar_Etheling1@HollywoodHandle They only update the Overseas total once per week (Sunday), meaning you have 7 days of performance for those markets instead of just 3 days like the domestic market update.
@GoldenPickaxe3@rabartlett@GiteshPandya It was heading for a 25% drop in 3rd weekend and ends up closer to 45% due to Spidey. Lost about $20M from Thursday to Sunday...and this trickles down to the rest of the movie's run as well, potentially $50-60M lost over the long haul. Opposite release dates would be nice.
@GoldenPickaxe3@rabartlett@GiteshPandya I wish the movies had opposite release dates. Odyssey would have a chance at $620+ million without Spidey hitting $360M this weekend and potentially $150M next weekend. Odyssey opening weekend was also deflated by World Cup by $6-7M as well.
@AKlay19@BrianDuffield I don't think Return of the King ran into something like The Odyssey in the same year. It's also possible Odyssey & Dune split votes, which opens up a strong lane for something else to win.
@bobgoochman Those screens don't impact the box office very much. Only 41 of them worldwide. But I think Odyssey should keep the 70mm film IMAX screens all the way until Dune's release in December.
@hank_soup@EvanRomano There is more of an emotional aspect to Odyssey compared to Dunkirk. And the worlwide box office might end up 3X larger as well, giving it a much stronger chance.
@Danimalish $2 billion is not possible due to Spider-Man's impact. But $1.4 billion is possible for Odyssey. That would be amazing if it can get to $1.4 billion.
@GiteshPandya Crazy run compared to Oppenheimer. Before release, I was just hoping Odyssey could end up around $300M domestic. But it might end up north of $550M. Pretty wild!
@Puppet528941@ERCboxoffice I wish they had opposite release dates. Allow Spider-Man to burn a lot of demand for 2 weeks, and then Odyssey could play against weaker competition in August & September.
@NextBestPicture Gonna be around $340M domestic after 14 days of playing, compared to $200M domestic for Oppenheimer in the same time period. Oppenheimer finished with $330M domestic. Pretty wild performance by The Odyssey!
