What if a nuclear weapon were used?
The world has no adequate plans, capacity or means to respond to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed us what nuclear weapons can do. Their human impact did not end with the explosions.
ICRC & IFRC call for action to reduce the risk of nuclear weapon use and work toward their total elimination.
Nuclear weapons must never be used again.

How would the world cope if a nuclear bomb was dropped? We wouldn’t. There are no plans, no capacity and no means to respond to the horrific consequences of nuclear weapons.
Nuclear weapons should never be used again.

Together with the Nepal Red Cross Society, the @IFRC is planning more flights carrying essential relief supplies to communities still cut off by the floods.
Devastating flash floods struck northern Nepal on 26 August, destroying homes, roads and bridges and cutting off communities.

77 years ago today, the four Geneva Conventions were adopted in Geneva, establishing a cornerstone of modern international humanitarian law.
Even in war, human life and dignity must be protected.
The wounded must receive care. Detainees must be treated humanely. Civilians must not be targeted. Humanitarian workers must be protected.
Yet rules only matter when they are respected.
In the first five months of 2026, 18 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff lost their lives while carrying out humanitarian work. Nine were killed in violent attacks.
War has rules. Humanity must not be absent.

8,556 people remain in shelters, around 45,000 households still lack running water, and extreme heat has made conditions even harder. The Japanese Red Cross continues delivering relief supplies and supporting evacuees.
Recovery takes far longer than the headlines.
