In Libra (his best novel) Don DeLillo constantly makes reference to the various ways that Lee Harvey Oswald is a quantified, quantifiable entity… hair samples, physical measurements, IQ tests, marksmanship scores, etc… but despite this mass of data, Oswald is still essentially unknowable. His motivations, intentions, “true” beliefs are obscured. The mass of data can only ever construct a fragmented picture of the man; an inherently flawed attempt at constructing some sort of narrative from disparate points, incommensurate with reality. Anyways, no I won’t be getting a Fitbit.
the problem with post-2010-ish Pop Punk is that it's being made by pop punk kids. pop punk used to be made by hardcore kids. real emo used to be made by hardcore kids. skramz and mathcore used to be made by jazz heads
I don't really know if The Police have like much of a lasting legacy as a band, like I don't know if they were particularly influential or anything. What I do know is that they absolutely kick ass and all of their albums slap
Rivers Cuomo is the true heir to Brian Wilson, a weird little guy with a supernatural knack for pop melody. No one’s happy about it, not us & certainly not Rivers. Brian isn’t either but that’s because he’s in a purgatory where he can’t listen to Shortnin' Bread for 10000 years
“If you haven't read hundreds of books, you are functionally illiterate, and you will be incompetent, because your personal experiences alone aren't broad enough to sustain you.”
— James N. Mattis
The kindest thing literature does is remind you that your peculiar little feelings have always existed. Someone, in some century, was equally confused by love, bored by society, tired of performing, and hungry for meaning.
@TobyIsAFish@Aregiian Bruh. I'm a lifelong Washingtonian and think it's the best state, but even I say you gotta give Oregon its due. Even apart from the nature, the music, food, agriculture, and beer are amazing.
