Takeaways from #ACR23#ReviewCourse session on Transition of Care Concerns in JIA - Dr. Rebecca Sadun
1. Know the subtypes of JIA (see slide) because there are significant differences and considerations.
2. Be aware of TMJ in JIA, which can cause damage and symptoms throughout life, but also occasionally have active inflammation.
3. Also be aware of anterior uveitis in JIA. Often asymptomatic until vision loss occurs, so patients should have lifelong screening. (Lower risk over duration of disease)
4. Younger patients often have higher metabolism of medications, so often using high doses of MTX etc.
5. Over 50% of pediatric patients don't show up after their first adult visit (!!!), so TRANSFER and WELCOME mnemonics can be helpful (see slides)
Yesterday was a really good day.
Maybe even a career high.
I should be popping the 🍾.
But with every high has to come a low, right? That’s how this works.
Have you been getting your mammograms like you’re supposed to?
I haven’t. 🧵

👉HOWEVER, I really love their introduction. Instead of the typical, boring, simplified, and not totally correct intro of "SLE is a systemic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology," they give a much better intro (all other research papers on SLE, take note:
✏️ "Patients classified as having systemic lupus erythematosus manifest immune-mediated inflammatory injury in virtually every organ system, and therefore, lupus can present across all fields of medicine. This well-known clinical heterogeneity results in many difficulties, including how to make the diagnosis or standardize treatment approaches. We now also know that patients clinically classified as having systemic lupus erythematosus represent a cluster of differing molecular pathologies that could explain these diverse phenotypes..."
