This #TidyTuesday: an information-dense look at representation of women in film (via the Bechdel test). The 1980’s were a particularly bad time for female representation in the top grossing films (which make up a huge portion of the USA box office). #Rstats

These are the films that have the potential to influence how people view women in a positive way (i.e. as full human beings), but they are still abysmal at doing so IMHO. The 80’s were just particularly rough.

Normal = boxplot is fine.
Anything else = violin with the median.
Dozens or fewer points = put them on top.
Hundreds or more points = too cluttered, leave them off.

I have known some truly remarkable #BlackInSTEM scientists who worked harder to get to a PhD than I will have to work over the course of my whole life. They deserve better. Ending police violence is essiential, but it is only be the start of the affirmation that #BlackLivesMatter

The argument that PoC just need to “get an education” to be raised up is laughable. The reality is: Black Americans *with* college degrees have roughly the same amount of economic freedom (wealth) as white Americans *without* a high school diploma. #BLM #EconomicEquality

This fact should surprise no-one with a basic sense of systemic and historic discrimination in the USA. Still, I found it particularly disheartening that (on average) advanced degrees confer basically no wealth benefit to Black Americans.
