Imagine poor and working class tenants. Now imagine them organizing, across buildings, neighborhoods, in encampments, citywide. Imagine them unionizing. Imagine those unions linking, sharpening each other, a different kind of power. You’re not just imagining, it’s happening 😌
Feeling the squeeze after paying your rent today?
There’s a way for you and millions of other tenants to fight back against skyrocketing rental housing costs: tenant unions.
@TenantFed's @taraghuveer explains what they are and how you can start your own.
For @nybooks, on the road to the NYC rent freeze and what else is possible for a tenant movement adjusting to formal power. Many thanks to @elusivecorporal for edits, and to @caaav, @TenantBloc, @CASAbronx for allowing me a peek into their organizing ❤️🔥

Donald Trump can tout the new “Golden Age” all he wants, but working Americans are struggling.
He’s a “hypocrite,” says @taraghuveer, Dir. of the Tenant Union Federation. Trump ran on the economy, but “insists on kicking Americans in their pocketbooks."

I write on the recent movement and how students stood shoulder to shoulder in the face of repression
The resignation is just the start.. solving the education crisis requires broad solidarity and collective struggle. The students of this country have learnt this in the movement
It's Union School season. @TenantFed's organizing training, this year w 809 trainees from 131 cities across 39 states. Reno to Richmond, El Paso to Ann Arbor, tenants joined w properties ID'd, or ready for an assignment. At minimum, this means we organize 26,250 units by Sept :)
One of the best parts of ROAD is it includes a national version of Pennsylvania's Whole Home Repairs program, which supports working class homeowners to cover critical habitability upgrades. Congrats to @NikilSaval and team on building/testing this model.

In 2022, when we passed the Whole-Home Repairs program in Pennsylvania, we knew it could be a model for other states and even the country.
Today—with the inclusion of a national Whole-Home Repairs program in the 21st Century Road to Housing Act and its passage into law—it is.
21st Century ROAD to Housing Act has passed Congress. Passed w bipartisan support, signaling a new day in American politics with housing as a central matter of economic policy. But ROAD isn't about tenants or the rent. On relief for everyday people, there's much more to deliver.
A closer look at the #MamdaniEffect.
For too long, politicians have lacked a "fundamental curiosity" about the experiences of American workers, says @taraghuveer. Progressive wins signal a "new way forward in American politics." #ConnectwithJacob

Are you sick and tired of dealing with soaring rent and crumbling buildings? Do you want to level the playing field between landlords and tenants?
Then it’s time to join a tenant union.
@taraghuveer of @TenantFed explains.
Tenants just launched the first rent strike in Montana in 50 years.
Residents at Bozeman mobile home parks are withholding $50,000 dollars in protest of a major rent hike.
It's a crucial fight for the last vestige of affordable housing.
Oops got logged out of here for a while, felt sun on my face... and then logged back in.
Best recent news: May 1 tenants across two trailer parks in Montana launched a rent strike following an 11% rent hike. More via @RebeccaJBurns_ for @inthesetimesmag: https://t.co/Cq5BFoFx1o
Listening to the latest (free) @thetrillbillies episode and listening to @taraghuveer talk has me ready to run through a wall. Good listen folks. Tara has some really great ideas about organizing that are refreshing and effective. Truly no hyperbole a breath of fresh air.
On our latest episode, tenant union organizer @taraghuveer -- who knows much, much more about housing policy and development dynamics than any of us -- lays out in extremely definitive terms what the abundance bros get wrong about housing.
"The idea that all we need to do is build more housing -- that's actually not rooted in reality. If you look at the numbers, there's no world in which we could build enough housing over the next 5 or 10 years at a pace fast enough to keep up with the loss of housing that's affordable to people as landlords hike the rent. Any thinking person understands that there is no simple solution for a problem that's this complex. It's a question of priority and sequence. The rent is too damn high today, and that's because the market is completely unregulated, it's the Wild West. The first thing we need to do is regulate the market. And then we need to think about supply -- and specifically, supply of housing that people can actually afford to live in."
A huge W for tenants in rural Kentucky, setting precedent for organizing throughout the South and in HUD properties across the country.
So deeply proud of the ferocious team: Josh, Cookie, Qamar, Amber, Heather, Kimberly, Ms. Rosa, Ms. Pauline, Mary Lou. Serious, hungry to win.
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW BEGINNING: Kentucky Tenant Union wins first tenant-bargained agreement in the South‼️
Yesterday two unions negotiated with their shared landlord and secured recognition, lease renewals, a 10-day grace period for rent, repairs schedule incl. mold remediation
@davidhudnall The premise of a union is that there's power in numbers. I agree with your point on leverage, but leverage isn't necessarily static, and IMO it's good to try for different kinds-- economic, political, otherwise. No dog in this particular fight... just don't get the grumpiness
MAJOR: Twin Cities Tenants joins five labor unions, together repping 25,900 members, to launch a rent strike drive, vowing to withhold rent March 1 if @GovTimWalz fails to deliver an eviction moratorium and rent relief. If launched, the largest US rent strike in 100+ years.
Resolution: Price controls can help address the affordability challenge.
Now being debated at the Center for American Progress chaired by the Biden chair of Council of Economic Advisors @econJaredB.
Hard to say how stunned I am that we can finally have this serious debate.
