"It’s good to have a clear idea where you want to be in say, 10 years. This will guide you on how to get there. Planning ahead is good, but you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself. There is plenty of time to discuss and talk with people about future plans......." Dr. Egil Droge

In 2014, when @Yoco_ZA was just getting started in South Africa, @musakamata (@VenturesSahara co-founder) and I were in Sinza, Dar es Salaam building #DaftariPay, a solution to digitize sales and inventory for small shop owners.
Our first approach was simple: install the app on basic smartphones and use the phone camera as a scanner. It failed quickly. Scanning was slow, queues got longer, and shop owners became frustrated.
We pivoted to bringing in external scanners from China. That also failed, the devices were expensive and constantly faced compatibility issues. We tried again by partnering with a telco to use their branded tablets, hoping for a smoother rollout. But the tablets were too slow, and even with our app pre-installed, the experience frustrated users further.
Our last strategy was to follow what later became the Yoco direction: getting our own devices. But it was too costly, and no investor was ready to trust or fund the idea at that time.
Seeing @Yoco_ZA today reminds me that sometimes you do everything; the idea, the product, the team, the execution, yet things still don’t work out.
Beyond skill and effort, timing, luck, environment, and investment play a much bigger role.
Keep building. Sometimes you’re not wrong, you’re just early.
We’re excited to invite you to an online training on the Mangrove Restoration Tracker Tool (MRTT), a powerful resource designed to help practitioners plan, implement, and monitor mangrove restoration activities effectively.
