Today, during the Expose the Corrupt and service delivery assessment tour in Masaka District, I travelled through Buzirango to Bukakata and was saddened to witness the massive destruction of our forests. Almost all the forest cover along this route has disappeared, exposing our water bodies and putting our ecosystem at great risk.

Our preliminary findings indicate that over 3,000 acres of natural forests under ( National Forest Authority ) have been destroyed across Masaka District. Even more alarming, the only surviving City Forest Reserve in Kimanya-Kabonera has reportedly been subdivided and sold to different individuals, threatening one of the last remaining natural forest reserves in Masaka City.

I will engage the senior officials in government on this matter to ensure a thorough investigation. All land titles reportedly issued to individuals, including Kimera , JB, Baker, and any others connected to this matter, must be investigated to establish whether due process was followed and to protect public land.

I also call for an urgent investigation into the role of officials in the Ministry of Lands, including Masaka lands staff and any other officers who may have been involved in processing or approving these transactions. Anyone found to have acted unlawfully must be held accountable in accordance with the law.

Those found responsible for the illegal destruction of our environment must be held accountable. Public land and protected forest reserves must never be sacrificed for private interests.

We must all protect our environment. If this destruction is not handled with the utmost urgency, many of our districts and local governments may experience declining rainfall, threatening agriculture, food security, water sources, and the livelihoods of our people. Let us act now to conserve our forests and safeguard Uganda’s natural heritage for future generations.
