Today, more than 150 #Teamsters gathered in Washington, D.C. for the annual Political Coordinators Meeting. Director of Political and Legislative Action (DPLA) James Donovan kicked off the meeting by welcoming guests and recapping the political and legislative success that Teamsters have had in the last year, and ongoing campaigns.
“In DPLA we’re taking the pride and excitement of being a Teamster and turning it into action,” said Donovan. “DPLA is committed to working harder than ever, shoulder to shoulder with all of you to bring the Teamsters Union’s clout back to city halls, state houses, the U.S. Capitol, and to the White House.”
Throughout the morning, Teamsters heard from State Legislative Director John Mataya on the Teamsters’ 2023 Worker Protection Package, which included the Autonomous Vehicle Public Safety Act, the Warehouse Worker Protection Act, and the Worker Free Speech Act.
“We are going to build upon our progress from the last legislative session and roll it into the next,” said Mataya. “In addition to updating the language of all three bills, we’re proud to add the Extreme Temperature Worker Protection Act to the 2024 Worker Protection Package. We have had several Teamster brothers and sister lose their lives due to extreme temperatures and we cannot lose one more, that’s why this legislation will be a Teamster priority in 2024.”
To close out the morning session, @SenAmyKlobuchar (D-MN) provided an update on pro-worker legislation on Capitol Hill and outlined the path forward for taking on corporate giants like Amazon.
“Our country has always promised that if you work hard, you get a fair shot. That’s why I am fighting every day to make that a reality. That means passing the PRO Act and protecting the right to organize, protecting free, fair, and secure union elections, and stopping retaliation against workers,” said Senator Klobuchar.
Teamsters will hear from elected officials, allies, and Teamster leadership over the next few days at the 2023 Political Coordinators Meeting.
NEW: The NLRB could soon make it much easier for workers to unionize.
The board plans to re-establish “Joy Silk,” forcing employers to recognize and bargain with any union supported by a majority of workers. Unions wouldn’t need to win formal elections.
@GreenhouseNYT explains.
We’re asking all JC 42 members to stand in solidarity / mobilize your brothers and sisters to these actions. We need to send a message to Chedraui/ Smart & Final to STOP attacking American workers by violating US Labor laws.
