⚠️This is a direct result of Texas's SB 2420/App Store Accountability Act, which supporters say just protects kids from p0rn and is a "narrow law" that won't affect adults.

This is Bluesky's age verification screen....this is a social media platform, not an adult content site.

➡️Bluesky is doing this gating ITSELF, at the platform level, not through the App Store. As predicted, SB 2420's compliance pressure is already reaching web-based platforms that aren't even app store downloads.

👀The label says "Age Assurance" in the top left, not age verification. This is the industry term for estimation techniques that use behavioral data, IP detection, and device signals to infer your age. The screen even admits it: "This estimate may be inaccurate if you're using a VPN." They're identifying Texas users by IP address.

➡️Supporters call this "privacy preserving transmission." That only describes the user-facing experience, not the back-end data architecture. Someone still knows where you are, who you are, and whether you're allowed to access a social media app.

SCOTUS declined to block this law Monday while the appeals process continues at the Fifth Circuit. This is what enforcement looks like in practice.

The Playstation literal killing of physical media has gotten more backlash than I thought it would, which is fantastic.

It's going to take way more pressure though. Much, much more. Sony expected huge backlash, they clearly are willing to take this PR hit and bunker down.

Are they right from a business pov though? Operationally it's a huge risk, PR and loyalty wise. Digital is likely primary at this point and will likely become more so. However, there are still many people who want physical media and it still sells in good numbers, at least for now.

But if Sony can tank it, kill physical media and get customers fully onboard long term? Huge win in theory, as digital is much more profitable and huge manufacturing and distribution overhead costs just go. It's a great business move.

Will this affect longterm connection to the platform though? Possible I suspect people are not as ready to go all digital as Sony and the industry think, I think it will alienate alot of people, much more than Sony thinks.

For me? Having no discs, it's not a dealbreaker, but it makes Playstation far less valuable as a platform. I will buy less games on PS5 and PS6 because of it and move more to Steam - Steam is reliable and versatile in a way PSN and Playstation just can't be. I have a huge disc collection, plenty of PS5 games. Maybe it's the millennial in me, but new releases are usually disc, if I'm paying premium (read full price) then I want something in my hands. But 70-80% of the games I launch are digital, these days. Once the disc game goes on sale for $10AUD though, that disc is never coming out again. I'm sure many people are the same.

I have very, very violent thoughts on Sony doing this, don't get me wrong. It disables easy game sharing between friends, resell, removes price pressure for PSN, ties customers to PSN TOS (which may not be fairly enforced!) and removes a huge element of ownership. Massive jackass, fuck-the-consumer move.

But, as angry as customers are - and they should be - will you drop Playstation for it? Yeah, realistically probably not. The next big PS5 exclusive, people are doing whatever they have to to get it. Sony know they have you by the balls. You're invested in the platform; trophies, friends, online, game purchases. The frustrating thing is they're right. They do. They do and it sucks.

Keep yelling and screaming though. Rattle the fkn bunker.
