An Apple engineer told her friend something that reframed the phone sitting in his pocket.

“Your iPhone is doing 11 things right now that you never turned on, never configured, and don’t know are happening.”

She listed them. It’s scanning every photo he takes for text signs, labels, documents, receipts and making the text copyable without him knowing. It’s listening for car crashes and preparing to call 911 and share his GPS coordinates if he doesn’t respond within 20 seconds. It’s locatable even when the battery dies and the phone is powered off. It’s transcribing his voicemails in real time so he can read them instead of listening. It’s identifying the song playing at this restaurant and displaying the name silently on the Dynamic Island without him asking Siri. It’s building a daily journal of where he went, what photos he took, what workouts he completed, and what music he listened to waiting for him to add words. It’s preparing to contact a satellite if he’s ever stranded without cellular signal. It’s monitoring for sounds smoke alarms, doorbells, babies crying and ready to alert him if his hearing can’t. It’s checking in on his safety during late-night drives and alerting his emergency contacts if he doesn’t confirm arrival. It’s summarizing 40 notifications into 1-sentence digests so the lock screen isn’t a wall of text. It’s cleaning photobombers and distracting objects out of his photos using AI before he notices they’re there.

He’d owned the phone for 14 months. He used it for calls, texts, photos, and Instagram. The phone was doing 11 things he didn’t know about silently, continuously, in the background.

A man paid his internet provider $15 every single month to rent a router.
