Much of Earth’s biodiversity lives belowground, but many soil-dependent species remain poorly studied.
A new global assessment identified 8,653 species that depend on soil, including invertebrates, fungi, and terrestrial vertebrates. Of these, 20.3% were found to be globally threatened, while another 19.9% were Data Deficient, meaning there is not enough information yet to assess their risk.
These species play vital roles in nutrient cycling, soil structure, decomposition, and climate regulation.
The study highlights a clear need: better monitoring, more research, and stronger conservation efforts for the life that keeps soil functioning.

Your Life becomes beautiful when you give it all and do not care what comes or does not come. The Joy of Life is in expression, not in begging. #SadhguruQuotes
