#TaddesseWerede’s only clear credit so far is that he helped delay the war, whether through deliberate action or simply by virtue of his position as head of TIRA remains uncertain. But this moment calls for more than passive influence. It requires decisive, transparent leadership. He must now actively and urgently facilitate the creation of an inclusive administration in #Tigray, one capable of pulling the region out of the #TPLF’s entrenched politico-military oligarchy, a system that has been sustained, in part, by #AbiyAhmed’s enabling.

The senior military leadership, particularly at the Corps level and above, made a critical error in January 2025 by aligning themselves with a single faction of the TPLF. That decision fractured Tigray’s already fragile prospects for avoid new war and force Addis Ababa to, among other things, return IDPs and restore Tigray’s pre-war territory. By April 2026, this mistake deepened, as the same military leadership, further entrenched itself alongside same actors of the TPLF whose interest in Tigray’s good appears contingent on assuming total control over both political and military power.

In practice, Tigray has always been at the mercy of a group that, despite projecting defiance, ultimately makes it easier for Abiy Ahmed to pursue his own anti-Tigray objectives. The appearance of resistance masks a reality that often aligns with his interests.

The central question, then, is whether Taddesse will rise to the occasion, whether he will act boldly and responsibly to shift this trajectory and offer even a glimmer of hope. In moments like this, it is not unreasonable to hold on to the possibility of unexpected, even extraordinary, leadership, even from the least capable and the stubbornly unwilling.

RE: GSTS Condemns the Denial of Education to Muslim Schoolgirls in Axum and Demands Accountability

The Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) vehemently condemns the continued denial of education to Muslim female students in Axum who have been barred from attending school due to their faith-based attire. This is despite a court order explicitly allowing them to continue their education with their hijabs and a letter from the Tigray Bureau of Education to allow the students to continue their education. This violation of the civil rights of our Muslim students and the blatant disregard for the rule of law is both alarming and unacceptable. Education must be a universal right and a cornerstone for rebuilding and developing our Tigray. The issue transcends religious or cultural lines and strikes at the very foundation of justice and equality.

The actions of the school administration and the Axum Bureau of Education violate the students’ right to public education and undermine the judicial system and disregard fundamental principles of governance. Additionally, the Tigray Bureau of Education has failed to enforce the law and fulfil its responsibilities. By failing to respect the court’s decision, these authorities are perpetuating injustice and discrimination against young Muslim girls while eroding public trust in institutions that are meant to serve the people.
GSTS stands in unwavering solidarity with the affected students, their families, and the broader Muslim community. We recognize the courage of these young girls who stand firm in the face of adversity and affirm our support for their rightful demand for access to education without any prejudice.

Therefore, the GSTS calls on the Tigray Interim Administration (TIA) to take immediate and decisive action, including:

1. Enforcing the court order to ensure students can resume their education without further delay; and
2. Holding school administrators and other responsible officials accountable for their actions.

GSTS reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights of all Tigrayan students and calls on all stakeholders to promote an inclusive and respectful educational environment.
