Two years after beginning mass detentions of the mostly Muslim Uighur minority, China has entered a new phase in its drive to forcibly assimilate the ethnic community in the name of counterterrorism and development. https://t.co/feaHnH4QIX
Our reporters returned to Urumqi a year after visiting to report on the mass surveillance and detention of Uighurs—and found a demolished neighborhood and only remnants of the culture that once thrived there. https://t.co/FGAfKe7cCm
President Trump said his administration was discussing leaving tariffs in place on Chinese goods for a "substantial period of time" https://t.co/Xh74ztwA4x
Wow, we're back to this? NEC Director Larry Kudlow just suggested on @CNBC that the "complicated Huawei issue" could become part of the trade talks: "We regard that more of a legal issue, at least at the moment. It may enter into trade. I don't want to make any predictions."
To make this thread less of a giant “I told you so,” here are some ideas that @jkwarden and I think the administration could use as a template for a series of agreements that would make the world and Northeast Asia safer: https://t.co/g1me5fJZnR
The least credible indicators of what North Korea has agreed to throughout this process have been the words of US officials themselves. Treat these as more a statement of how the administration might like the world to be than a statement of how it actually is.
And here are some Republican Senators who have been notable Russia skeptics or hawks, but who nonetheless voted this afternoon to back the TRUMP administration's move to lift sanctions against OLEG DERIPASKA's companies:

Tsai response to Xi's Taiwan speech: "I want to reiterate that Taiwan absolutely will not accept 'one country, two systems.' The vast majority of public opinion in Taiwan is also resolutely opposed to OCTS, & this opposition is also a 'Taiwan consensus.'"

As president of the Republic of China, I must stress that we’ve never accepted the “1992 Consensus,” & the “four musts” are crucial for positive cross-strait developments. I call on #China to bravely take steps towards democracy, so they can truly understand the people of #Taiwan
@peter_dutton Agreed. I think Xi has come to realize that Taiwan is a more complex challenge than he initially thought. Xi has adopted new approaches to many other issues, but on Taiwan he has basically stayed the course, following the “peaceful dev” strategy set by Hu.
