I woke up this morning and feel like there’s something I need to share.
There’s first mover advantage and first mover disadvantage, the issue is, we only talk about the advantage but rarely talk about the disadvantages.
You know the interesting thing? There’s more disadvantage to being a first mover than the advantages.
- Market education : As a first mover, you’re responsible for educating the market on exactly what your product is and why they should use it. ( Era of Smart phone, Online education in Nigeria [Open University])
- Marker orientation : In most cases, you’re building on an existing concept and introducing it in a new way, you own little to no trust in the market, and you’re responsible for shaping perspective on how that product should be received. You’ll spend a lot of your money convincing people to see your perspective. ( E-commerce in Nigeria)
- Market Growth : It’s harder for you to grow as a first mover because you want to keep the definition of your product intact, the issue here is, new companies have nothing to lose so they can come into the market, leverage on your name as a competitor and do new things that looks innovative in the space. ( Food delivery in Lagos, The story of HTC)
There’s a lot more disadvantage to being a first mover but I’ll allow you think about it and share some of it in the comment.
