French Beans in Rwanda: A High-Value Crop with Great Economic and Nutritional Benefits
French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), commonly known as green beans, are among Rwanda’s most valuable horticultural export crops. They are highly appreciated for their tender pods, excellent nutritional value, and strong demand in international markets, making them an important source of income for farmers.
Beyond their economic importance, French beans are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Regular consumption supports healthy vision, promotes heart health, aids blood sugar management, and contributes to a balanced, nutritious diet.
Popular French Bean Varieties in Rwanda
Several improved varieties are successfully grown across the country, including:
Vanilla
Star
Theresa
Serengeti
These varieties are selected for their high yields, excellent pod quality, and suitability for both local consumption and export markets.
Where French Beans Are Grown
French bean production is concentrated in districts with favorable climatic conditions, including:
Gasabo
Rwamagana
Kayonza
Bugesera
Kirehe
Nyagatare
These regions provide the ideal environment for producing premium-quality beans that meet international export standards.
Ideal Growing Conditions
For maximum productivity and quality, French beans require:
Air temperatures between 20°C and 25°C.
Soil temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C.
Well-drained, fertile, friable alluvial soils rich in organic matter.
A soil pH of 5.5–6.8 for optimum nutrient availability and plant growth.
Where soils are too acidic, agricultural lime should be applied to correct soil pH. Proper land preparation and good soil aeration are equally important, as they encourage healthy root development and efficient nitrogen fixation by beneficial soil bacteria.
A Crop with Strong Export Potential
French beans remain one of Rwanda’s leading horticultural export commodities, supplying premium markets in Europe, the Middle East, and other international destinations. Their high market value presents a significant opportunity for farmers to increase incomes while contributing to Rwanda’s growing horticultural export sector.
With the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), proper post-harvest handling, and compliance with export quality standards, French bean farming continues to offer promising opportunities for youth, commercial farmers, and agribusiness investors seeking sustainable and profitable ventures.
