@peg_roger@AndrewHWestern Why doesn’t the government also have the policy of ending all violence, and giving everyone a free car and also chocolate ice cream everyday? Violence and impulsivity is unfortunately part of the human condition. No amount of deterrence can prevent violent crimes of passion.
@FortressLugh I just don’t believe this guy has faith in Woden the same way his ancient ancestors did; even if he would want to, it’s just not something that’s accessible to the modern mind.
@IrishArtist2025 As a Brit, having a convo with a boomer Irishman is like walking on eggshells; constantly stumbling over these tripwires, offending them in ways you don’t even understand, even when you mean well. Glad this isn’t a trait Gen Z Irish have inherited.
@BacchusAwakes Because the entirety of Western Europe was Celtic in the Bronze age, rather than it being some parochial thing exclusive to the British Isles (as too many people seem to think).
@MerryOlEngland Remember being introduced to one at the pub. When my mate told me he was rozzer he saw my expression change and said ‘no don’t worry, this one’s on our side’. After speaking for the evening, he was telling the truth. Think it depends on the area more than anything.
@Dr_Gavin_Brewis Elitists aren’t much liked in England either (although I’m not sure Simon Jordan fits in that category since he was raised working class). The anti-Jock/Taff stuff is usually from London/Southeast, and unlike this example it’s usually in a tongue in cheek.
@Tom_Rowsell I actually take delight in not acquiescing to pressure in this way. Maybe I’m pigheaded sometimes, but the more you try and force my hand, the more I resist.
@theiaincameron@IIANIMAIII@itvfootball I don’t understand the complaining about this. I think the fact that players born in England would choose to play for Scotland is greater reason to feel united than divided. There’s probably more people of Scottish/Welsh descent in England, than in either Scotland or Wales.
@NicholasOShaug1 Oh I absolutely believe these other hegemonic powers did evil, and far more so than Britain. The scales clearly tip in favour of Britain’s net effect being that of good. I was implying the original commenters point is moot, as simply most things today are attributable to Britain.
@salingergregor Our monarch is meant to be the guarantor of our rights and liberties, to whom we can petition, as a counterpoint to parliament. They are meant to be an avatar of the British people, our culture, and our will. In essence, the monarch is a moderating force.
