Our Lord cracked a whip and turned tables over because in what was meant to be God’s house and a safe place for His sheep was a place of exploitation of the lambs. They were being robbed of a refuge in the house of God.
When someone is vulnerable, they are susceptible to attack or injury. Whenever power is used in a way that wounds the vulnerable or that exploits trust, abuse has occurred.
4 days out from my life-changing surgery, @Aetna has denied the appeal for my brain surgery.
to be clear, when i signed up to aetna months ago, the coordinator had confirmed they would cover this surgery. then, a week ago, they said the surgery was too experimental/elective and denied coverage. we appealed. that appeal was just denied today.
now, my neurosurgeon is trying to do a peer-to-peer consult with someone at aetna to explain why i need it so we don’t lose the surgery date on monday morning. aetna is not being responsive.
this is sadistic and a violation of basic trust. please spread this so they can’t ignore it. they may not care if i live or die but people should know just what kind of company they’re dealing with. and please pray they are able to have a peer-to-peer consult with my neurosurgeon and have a change of heart.
Relational participatory church? How is that possible?
By letting God change our attitudes.
For example:
I may have an ability or perspective you lack.
But I have yet to meet anyone – and I mean anyone – who does not in turn exceed me in some aspect of their own abilities and perspectives …
Even if they’re a brand new Christian.
Relational participatory church – as mandated in the New Testament – only works when we all, leaders included, begin to embrace that kind of perspective …
By learning to truly submit one to another as the multi-part, multi-gifted, multi-functional Body of Christ.
Otherwise, ministry by one another for the mutual edification and building up of each other when we gather together …
Is impossible.
Deception becomes systemic when we use our collective power to protect what we desire to be true rather than face the destruction and the pain that accompanies the actual truth. Deception functions as a narcotic in protecting us from seeing or feeling that which is painful to us.
Systemic abuse occurs when a system, such as a family, a government entity, a school, a church, a religious organization, or a political group, enables the abuse of the people it purports to protect.
We must not assume that our family, church, community, country, or organization is always right just because the people in it use the right words. We must never agree to “protect” the name of God by covering ungodliness.
We damage the dignity of others when we refuse to wait for them—whether they need to tie their own shoes or they are struggling to find words for the indescribable. We bestow honor on another when we consider him or her worth waiting for.
We have often blamed those who suffer for their trauma; we have failed to recognize that systems can be corrupt and power abused and that, like our Lord, many people in this world suffer from totally undeserved injustice and trauma.
There are only four passages in the entire New Testament which mention singing God’s praises together when we gather as the church.
And in those verses, there is just one reason given for that congregational singing …
And it’s not “worship.”
Rather, it’s to encourage one another.
That’s it.
Nothing else.
In fact, the New Testament never refers to singing or our gatherings as “worship” …
And the Greek words often translated as “worship” have absolutely nothing to do with what we call “worship” these days.
So the popular idea that we go to a “worship service” where we sing and do other things to invoke, experience or encounter God’s presence …
Doesn’t exist in the New Testament.
Nope, not, nada …
Just ain’t there.
Rather, that’s rooted in the Old Testament idea of the temple, where people went to encounter God.
In contrast, under the New Covenant, we have become God’s temple because He now dwells in us and among us.
Thus, we are commanded to sing and participate together for our mutual encouragement - one to another - as we express God’s presence already in us.
Nothing more, nothing less.
So let’s stop distorting Scripture by putting on staged performances designed make us encounter “God’s presence” …
And calling that “worship.”
It’s not. It’s just carnality masquerading as spirituality to justify the prevailing corrupt practice of turning “church” into a spectator event performed by a few from an elevated stage.
Instead, let’s return to what the New Testament actually commands in our gatherings:
By joyfully participating together as we share and sing God’s praises with each other to express His presence already in us…
For the simple purpose of edifying and mutually building up one another.
Maybe then true worship will more fully emerge among us …
As people stop thinking of “worship” as a staged Sunday event and finally start living lives of reverent, sacrificial obedience to Him throughout the rest of the week.
When we use God’s sacred Word in a way that harms another, commanding them to do wrong, manipulating them, deceiving them, or humiliating them, we have spiritually abused them.
I’ve worked with hundreds of folks over 25 years from all different stripes, backgrounds and faith traditions, and you know who has the hardest time with @wademullen’s great graphic below?
Christian leaders.
“Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.”
— St. Augustine
Early christian practice neither worshipped nor demonized the things of the world. They worshipped God and viewed the things as gifts to enjoy. (1 Timothy 6:17, 1 John 2:15)
Verbal power is a tremendous power. People who have a command of words, or are articulate, can dominate a conversation, a room, a relationship, a group, or a nation. Words can be used to influence, shape, and encourage or to humiliate, deceive, maneuver and control.
You don't glorify a dentist with good oral hygiene, that demonstrates your abilities. You glorify a dentist by opening your mouth and letting him work on what's wrong. Glorifying God is not demonstrating our capacity, but surrendering to His.
