The last Javan rhinos survive thanks to a volcano, and a volcano could also end them. π
After Krakatoa erupted in 1883, its tsunami emptied the coast of Ujung Kulon. The jungle grew back and became their final refuge.
Today, every one of them lives in that single park, in Krakatoa's shadow. π¦
@engineers_feed The rocket that carried them into space was built to destroy London. π
The V-2 was a captured Nazi weapon, made partly by slave labor. After the war, America used it to answer a question no one could: could anything survive up there?
Some tiny flies found out first. πͺ°
Until 1995, nobody could prove other stars like our Sun had planets at all. πͺ
Oct 6, 1995: Two Swiss astronomers announced 51 Pegasi b, the first one ever found.

Seven months later, Macready and Kelly flew the same Fokker T-2 nonstop from New York to San Diego in about 27 hours. It was the first nonstop flight across America.
The plane survives at the Smithsonian today.
Could you sit in that cockpit for 35 hours? π
@VoicesofWW2 One of WWII's most feared weapons was named after a love song. πΆ
Soviet troops called them "Katyusha," after a hit song about a girl waiting for her soldier.
The Germans had their own name for that howling sound: "Stalin's organ."
Which name fits better? π
The man who gave movies a voice died the day before anyone heard it. ποΈ
99 years ago today, Oct 6, 1927, The Jazz Singer premiered in New
York.
Sam Warner had begged his brothers to bet Warner Bros. on sound. He died on October 5. His brothers missed the premiere to bury him.
Here's the twist most people never hear:
β The film was still mostly silent
β Only a couple of minutes had spoken dialogue
β Some of it was Al Jolson ad-libbing
Then Jolson turned to the crowd:
"Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!"
The audience erupted. Within a few years, silent film was all but gone.
A complicated film (Jolson performs in blackface), but it changed cinema forever. π¬
Imagine knowing a story like this for every day of the year.

Pol Pot studied in Paris and taught at a school in Phnom Penh. His most notorious prison, S-21, was a converted high school.
He died in 1998 without ever facing trial.

@romanhistory1 Rome's bloodiest defeat may not have been caused by the enemy. βοΈ
It was caused by pride.
Two Roman commanders hated each other so much they refused to camp together. The Cimbri, a tribe possibly from Denmark, crushed them one by one.
Who were the Cimbri, really? π
@AlbertEinstein Two men the Nazis couldn't stand, in one photo. πΈ
Einstein had fled Hitler's Germany in 1933. A year after this, La Guardia suggested a "chamber of horrors" at the World's Fair starring Hitler, sparking official protests from Berlin.
Bold company to keep. π
@CinemaTweets1 Part of why it feels so real: much of it was filmed in genuine LA neighborhoods like Imperial Courts and the Jungle. π¬
Antoine Fuqua worked with locals to film there, and some residents ended up on screen.
A film that still hits this hard 25 years on? Timeless is right. π
@NikTek Fun fact: in most early Spider-Man games, Spidey's webs stuck to the sky.
It wasn't until 2004's Spider-Man 2 that webs had to attach to real buildings, and that game's swinging set the bar for every one since.
Now Trevor's doing it in his underwear.
Progress? π
@TipOfTheBanana Here's another twist: Del Monte didn't start with fruit at all. β
The name began in the 1880s on a premium coffee blend made for the Hotel Del Monte, a luxury resort in Monterey, California. Fruit came later.
What else in your pantry isn't what you think? π

@trendyhoopstars The team that gave Taj her first ring doesn't exist anymore. π
The Detroit Shock moved to Tulsa in 2010, then became the Dallas Wings in 2016. And Taj didn't even reach the WNBA until her late 20s, after playing at a small NAIA school.
Most underrated career in WNBA history?

In the Cold War, the Soviets hid nuclear missiles in its forests at PlokΕ‘tinΔ, now a museum. After independence, the 1992 constitution banned them.

Scientists didn't even know this monkey existed until 1990. π
The black-faced lion tamarin was discovered on a remote island off Brazil, and only a few hundred are thought to survive. Now it's getting vaccines in the wild.
