Yeah, anyone who thinks we humans weren't polluting in the good old days isn't taking to account not just the mining, but the fact that everyone was burning stuff (wood and other things) for everything. The large cities in the ancient world reportedly had smoke clouds over them.

It's almost worth moving to a new country just to have the chance to have this happen in my yard. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE indigenous American arrowheads (which DO turn up). But Europe has Viking Excaliburs laying in silt in lakebeds. To quote an Irishman: "ya can't beat that".
