When I met Surprise Khosa, a 50 year old living with a disability and diagnosed with TB in 2001, I made a commitment to improve his living conditions. He possesses a Master's degree in Development Planning and an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts. Until recently, he was living alone in an unsafe shack and depended on a social grant for survival. His TB has resulted in only one functioning lung, adding to his health challenges. Life has been incredibly tough for him. When life knocked him down, he built a throne from what was meant to break him. Meet Mr. Khoza, a 50-year-old man who turned paraplegia into power. While society often discriminates against those with disabilities, Khoza refused to let others define his potential.

CMF is intensifying its humanitarian efforts in response to the severe floods that have affected Mthatha. We are excited to announce that a team has been deployed to work alongside local stakeholders to facilitate additional aid distribution & develop permanent housing solutions.

This week, the CMF team will visit additional displacement centers in Mthatha, including Norwood Centre, housing over 100 displaced individuals who have not yet received formal support & Bambanani Centre, sheltering 80 people who were forcibly relocated from municipal housing.

CMF’s Thatho Mokoena is in discussions with AbaThembu King Dalindyebo regarding land allocation, as many individuals are left without a permanent place to call home. Some residents had settled near the Mthatha Dam, which is believed to have flooded during the recent heavy rains.

A team from CMF, headed by its chairperson and founder, Dr. Collen Mashawana, will visit several families whose homes have been devastated by the floods. Additionally, the team will go to centers accommodating other displaced victims to provide support. #easterncapefloods

This week, we are in Umthatha, Eastern Cape, assisting families impacted by the recent floods that have destroyed homes, leaving many people without their belongings and resulting in some tragic losses of life. As the search for missing individuals continues, I was accompanied today by my colleagues Ndileka Mandela and @ChangeAgentSA , who are actively leading our support and aid efforts. The Umthatha Owners Taxi Association joined us in distributing food, clothing, building materials, mattresses, and blankets. Just as we did during the Mamelodi Floods, KZN Floods, and other disasters, we will collaborate with the government and various partners to rebuild homes in Eastern Cape.
