1946 (నెల్లూరు): మూలపేటలోని వేణుగోపాలస్వామి ఆలయంలో దళితులకు ప్రవేశం కల్పించాలని 10 రోజులు దీక్ష చేసి విజయం సాధించారు.

1948 (వార్ధా): హరిజనోద్ధరణ కోసం 29 రోజులు దీక్ష చేశారు.

మన తరువాత కేరళ, కర్ణాటక, మహారాష్ట్ర, గుజరాత్, పంజాబ్, హర్యానా రాష్ట్రాలు భాషా ప్రతిపాదికన ఏర్పడ్డాయి అంటే దానికి ఆధ్యులు పొట్టి శ్రీరాములు గారు.
అలాంటి మహనీయుని చరిత్రని భవిష్యత్తు తరాలు స్మరించుకునే విధంగా ఆంధ్రుల రాజధాని అమరావతిలో కూటమి ప్రభుత్వం 6.8 ఎకరాల భూమిని కేటాయించి, శ్రీరాములు గారి 58 రోజుల ఆమరణ నిరాహార దీక్షకు గుర్తుగా 58 అడుగుల విగ్రహం ఏర్పాటు చేయడం ఆనందించదగ్గ అంశం.

తెలుగు ప్రజలు స్వాభిమానంతో జీవించాలనే సంకల్పంతో ప్రత్యేక తెలుగు రాష్ట్రం కోసం 58 రోజుల ఆమరణ నిరాహార దీక్ష చేసి ప్రాణత్యాగం చేసి, దేశంలో భాషా ప్రయుక్త రాష్ట్రాలకు పునాది వేసిన మహనీయుడు పొట్టి శ్రీరాములు గారు. ఆయన త్యాగం తరతరాలకు స్ఫూర్తి.

ఈ సందర్భంలో రాష్ట్ర రాజధాని అమరావతిలో కూటమి ప్రభుత్వం, ముఖ్యమంత్రి నారా చంద్రబాబు నాయుడు గారు, ఉప ముఖ్యమంత్రి పవన్ కళ్యాణ్ గారి చేతుల మీదుగా 58 అడుగుల Statue of Sacrifice విగ్రహం ఆవిష్కరణ జరగడం గర్వకారణం.

ఈ విగ్రహం భావితరాలకు వారి త్యాగాన్ని గుర్తుచేస్తూ చరిత్రలో నిలిచిపోతుంది. విగ్రహ ఏర్పాటుకు సహకరించిన ముఖ్యమంత్రి నారా చంద్రబాబు నాయుడు గారికి మరియు కృషి చేసిన అమరజీవి పొట్టి శ్రీరాములు మెమోరియల్ ట్రస్ట్ సభ్యులకు ప్రత్యేక ధన్యవాదాలు.

తెలుగు జాతి ఆత్మగౌరవం కోసం ప్రాణత్యాగం చేసిన ఆ మహనీయుడిని మరోసారి స్మరించుకుంటూ ఘన నివాళులు.

On the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Amarajeevi Sri Potti Sriramulu Garu, I pay my heartfelt tributes to this great leader whose life itself was a movement and continues to inspire generations.

With the resolve that Telugu people should live with self-respect after Independence, he undertook a 58-day fast-unto-death demanding a separate state for Telugu people. His ultimate sacrifice laid the foundation for the formation of linguistic states in India.

It is a matter of great pride that on this occasion, in the state capital Amaravati, the Kutami NDA government will unveil the 58-foot Statue of Sacrifice of Potti Sriramulu Garu by the hands of Hon’ble Chief Minister shri @ncbn Garu and Deputy Chief Minister Shri @PawanKalyan Garu.

This statue will stand as a lasting reminder of his sacrifice and inspire future generations. My sincere thanks to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Garu and the members of the Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu Memorial Trust for their efforts in making this possible.

Remembering once again the great leader who sacrificed his life for the self-respect of the Telugu people, I offer my humble tributes on his 125th birth anniversary.

Jayanti of Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu whose fast unto death led to the formation of a separate Andhra State.

Born in Prakasam dt, but grew up in Nellore dt, reason why the district is named after him.

Schooling in Chennai, and then did a diploma in Sanitary Engineering from the prestigious VJTI in Mumbai.

Joined the Great Indian Peninsular Railway in Bombay and worked there for four years.

Loss of his wife and child, made him lose interest in worldly affairs.

Joined freedom struggle at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi.

Took part in the Salt Satyagraha and was imprisoned in 1930, and later along with the Mahatma was put in jail during the 1942 Quit India movement.

Setting up the Hindu Sanskarana Samithi, he worked for the upliftment of Dalits and also eradication of untouchability.

Established ashram at Komaravolu in Krishna dt, in response to Gandhi's call for serving rural areas.

Went on a fast , for allowing Dalits entry into Nellore’s Venugopala Swamy Temple and was successful for it.

Undertook another fast to get the Madras Government to pass orders for Dalit upliftment.

Demand for Andhra State was quite a long standing one, raised for the first time in 1910. Many Telugu people, felt their interests would be better served on their own, than being a part of Madras State.

Though Dhar Comission appointed post independence, rejected idea of linguistic state, Massive protests in coastal Andhra however made Nehru reconsider the idea.

JVP( Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhai Patel, Pattabhi Sitaramayya) comittee was constituted in 1948, to look into it.

Prior to Sriramulu, Swamy Seetharam launched a fast unto death in 1951, the Center ignored it initially.

However as it went on for 35 days, and the situation was getting out of hand, Vinobha Bhave and Nehru, met Seetharam and made him break his fast, assuring him of looking into his demands.

With Nehru going back on his promise, Sriramulu again went on a fast, this time in the home of Bulusu Sambamurthy in Chennai.

In 1952, when Sriramulu began his fast, no Congress leader was willing to offer him shelter, only Bulusu Sambamurthy stepped forward, and offered him his house.

He would pay for this dearly later on, when the Congress party ignored him, and he died in utter penury.

In the meanwhile Sriramulu’s fast was gaining attention, Tanguturi Prakasam visited him, while Yerneni Subramanyam wept for him.

Sadly the Andhra Congress turned their back on Sriramulu and gave him no support for the fast.

However the public by now was fully with Sriramulu, and massive demonstrations broke out in all major towns of Andhra.

Sriramulu’s health slowly deteriorated, on the 56th day he went into a coma, and finally on December 15, 1952, he breathed his last.

The only other case where a freedom fighter fasted to death was Jatin Das in prison. Legendary singer Ghantasala Gaaru composed a song in his honor, he was there when he passed away.

The emotion soon broke out into riots, as the protesters went about breaking and destroying public property. The riots spread like wildfire in Andhra, and 7 people were killed in firing in Anakapalle and Vijayawada.

Finally on December 19, 1952 Nehru announced the formation of Andhra State, it would be the first state in India to be formed on a linguistic basis.

Andhra State was formed on Oct 1, 1953 with Kurnool as it’s capital. Potti Sriramulu’s fast unto death, would spark off a similiar demand for other linguistic states, and the map of India would never be the same again. His supreme sacrifice would forever be remembered.
