@cobblerandcream@le0serran01@outbreakupdates This is a case study- with an N=1- not peer-reviewed science. I understand that it may seem legit to draw conclusions from a single report of a single case when you’re not a researcher yourself. But. No. Not science
@FeistyFS079@labonnelab The disconnect here in your understanding is that I did my BS, MS, and PhD just ‘to get a good job’ I quit a 80k+ salary to pursue a career of passion knowing I’d make a shit salary for 10+ yrs despite my 3 degrees. Bc science is important whether you understand it or not
@FeistyFS079@labonnelab Genuinely asking- bc I’m not sure what you mean by ‘private sector’ as far as unbiased research is concerned. Do you mean non-academic? Industry? Scientists pay+ to have their research published to ensure it’s non-biased in peer review
@prettyboyssurf@VertigoWarrior It was under construction. Bangkok isn’t on a major faultline. Cities w major faultlines even “undeveloped” are typically more prepared for a quake of this magnitude. LA nearly burnt to the ground. Check your ethnocentric arrogance plz
Our NIH grant to discover coronavirus antiviral meds was terminated today.
With this grant, we had developed a better SARSCoV2 inhibitor than Paxlovid, and we recently discovered an improved drug that looks better than Pfizer's own second-generation inhibitor.
@FeistyFS079@labonnelab I’m worried about scientific advancement which does relay (and benefit) us all. Sure, can I take a position that pays well with my degrees? Yup. But my expertise is specialized (it’s the point of a STEM PhD) so that means there are few people in the world qualified
@FeistyFS079@labonnelab I’ll take this to mean you have limited understanding of how science works- whether it be in an academic setting or an industrial one. I’ll be able to get work yes- as I have been with my BS, MS, and my PhD. However- I’m not worried about “just getting a job” (1)
@FeistyFS079@labonnelab Most PhD scientists- regardless of their field- are expected to be proficient coders- it’s how we analyze our data. Research goes way beyond “lab work”. A PhD means you’ve been trained for 5-15+ yrs in post grad work to be a jack of all trades AND an expert in your specialization
A personal story about how the potential grant funding freeze might affect science. Right now, I'm in my fourth year of a 5-year NIH grant and my last year of funding is supposed to start February 1st. I'm supporting a postdoc, two graduate students, and two lab managers
Camouflaged, neutral or bright and spinny? How the type of web spiders build influences how they protect themselves from predators. Excited to see our work out in Insect Systematics and Diversity @EntsocAmerica@UBCBiodiversity@ZoologyUBC@The_Bug_Girl https://t.co/vbkrPHJSoW
Probably the best thing I've done as a scientist is participating in this amazing event and meeting everyone else involved. I'm so sad I'm not there this year to help facilitate 😭
I am thrilled to announce that I will be starting as an Assistant Professor in Biology @TCU@TCU_CSE this fall!
I have one position available for a PhD student in my lab, with an anticipated start date of August 2024. 🐜🌱🐝 More below 👇
My lab is recruiting a PhD student and Post-Doc to investigate plant fertilization dynamics. If you're interested, please send your cover letter and CV to [email protected]!
