Thryve did not begin with a hypothetical AI use case.
It began inside a working garden center.
I’m James Cressler, a fourth-generation owner/operator at Rolling Ridge Nursery in St. Louis, Missouri, our family business founded in 1959. My work has spanned operations, purchasing, e-commerce, customer experience, landscape services, and helping modernize a business built long before modern software existed.
That experience exposed a much larger problem: independent garden centers are technologically underserved.
Garden centers manage thousands of living products, seasonal demand, fragmented supplier systems, inventory uncertainty, specialized knowledge, logistics, loyalty programs, and customer questions that rarely have simple answers.
Yet most available software is generic, disconnected, or designed without a real understanding of how these businesses operate.
I’m building Thryve to change that.
Thryve is an AI-native software and systems company. We turn operational knowledge into connected, production-grade products, not generic chatbots sitting beside the work.
LIVE TODAY: THE THRYVE GARDEN PLATFORM
The platform is live at Rolling Ridge Nursery through a connected customer app, commerce and operations backend, and Jim AI.
The customer experience brings together digital loyalty and rewards, purchase history, My Garden, personalized plant-care tools, product discovery, an in-app catalog, and access to Jim across the web and native mobile.
Behind it, the backend connects customer accounts, loyalty transactions, Shopify and POS workflows, product and order data, staff tools, and the APIs that keep every surface synchronized.
Jim AI is the intelligence layer.
Jim, named after my Grandfather who was a beloved local horticulture legend, combines leading language and vision models with curated horticultural knowledge, Thryve’s plant ontology, merchant context, local and seasonal conditions, and the customer’s own purchases, saved plants, and garden history.
Jim can answer garden questions, identify plants from photos, investigate visible plant problems, provide care guidance, and connect that guidance to relevant products carried at our store.
The goal is not “ChatGPT with a green theme.”
It is useful plant intelligence with memory, context, and a direct connection to the garden center.
WHAT WE’RE BUILDING
The Garden Center Procurement Platform is being developed and piloted to give buyers one operating layer across suppliers and their own store data.
It is designed to combine supplier catalogs, inventory, sales velocity, replenishment recommendations, pricing policies, purchase orders, receiving, and controlled Shopify updates—reducing the hours lost moving among portals, spreadsheets, emails, and disconnected records.
The Thryve Install Network is in development as a coordination layer for retailers, contractors, schedules, customer context, and the field work behind planting and installation services.
Together, the Garden Platform, Procurement Platform, and Install Network are building toward a broader Thryve Horticulture Network: connected infrastructure across garden centers, customers, suppliers, inventory, and field-service partners.
THE SYSTEM BEHIND THE SYSTEMS
Across Thryve, we are building a proprietary Agent Fabric: a controlled, observable network with a central manager, operator chat bridge, and specialized knowledge, database, development, and infrastructure agents.
It turns what each product teaches us about orchestration, trusted knowledge, diagnostics, and human-agent collaboration into reusable infrastructure with bounded tools, auditable work, explicit approvals, and real connections to APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and business systems.
HOW WE WORK WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
Thryve also works directly with businesses through:
• AI Strategy & Advisory: Determining where AI can create measurable value, what should remain human controlled, what risks must be addressed, and where to begin.
• Systems & Integration: building APIs, MCP servers, RAG and knowledge systems, specialized agents, workflow automation, business-system integrations, and complete production software.
The mission is straightforward:
Give real-world businesses, starting with independent garden centers, the modern software, connected data, and practical intelligence that larger industries already take for granted.
I’ll use this account to share what we ship, what we learn, and where AI-native software is headed when it is built around actual work instead of demos.
Garden centers, suppliers, technology partners, and businesses with operational problems that AI should improve rather than complicate: let’s connect.

I've burned through 23% of my weekly limit since todays reset. Two projects running 6.1 sol ultra. When 6.1 was first released I could run 5 projects simultaneously and not burn through this much of my limit in such a short amount of time. Something has obviously changed @thsottiaux and at this point, pretending like it hasn't is a basically spitting in our face
@thsottiaux when 6.1 sol was released, on the $200 plan, it felt like i could have 5 active threads running and barely make a dent in the usage limit. Now, it just melts.
@levelsio There are plenty of “regular” people who aren’t in the traditional tech industry that know how to do everything with ai that tech industry people can, but those people are different from the vast majority of the population
@PaulSolt My kids are 5 and 2. The routine of the house is decided by me and my wife, and we stick to it relentlessly. Can't let the inmates run the asylum my friend! That being said, I recognize what works for us might not work for you. Best of luck!
i give it at least 5 years. I dont think you understand how behind the normal person is. Most people use extremely dated software to conduct business. You're never going to get those people to drop what they know for an agent to build software for them. They need to crawl before they can walk
@chxrles 100%. Many businesses are still, somehow, surviving on dated software. Expecting those people to make the jump into total and complete ai agentic automation is a pipe dream at best. They need to learn to crawl before they can learn to walk
@DanielDiMartino Microsoft laid off 6000 Americans in 2025 and replaced them with H1B’s. That’s not what the program was designed for. Pretty straightforward
@quxiaoyin If enterprises aren’t ready, that’s on them. You can sell them what they want now, AND what they’ll need later after they figure it out at their own pace. Unless theres an exceptionally forward thinking ceo/owner, not much else you can do
My @OpenAI dot (Henry) just saved me $1,198.08!
While monitoring my Gmail, Henry spotted a promotional email that could apply to a tradeshow order I placed while attending the show two weeks ago. He compared the promotion against my order and drafted a follow-up to my sales rep.
The supplier identified a pricing calculation issue and sent back a corrected order acknowledgment:
$11,435.86 → $10,237.78.
Same quantities. Same requested shipment date. Same payment terms.
This is a concrete example of AI helping with the everyday work of running an independent business.
Thanks Henry!
